1975 Ford 3400 Power Steering Pump Input Seal??

With the amount of traffic this site gets I imagine no one remembers my original thread. Bought a piece of property that came with a 1975 ford 3400. Seems to be in overall good condition.

Replaced the fuel pump for good measures, replaced the rubber fuel lines where someone had cut the hard lines (maybe someday Ill find some good used hard lines) and replaced the fuel valve on the bottom of the fuel tank that was leaking. Ran the tractor for an hour or so and the power steering kept running out of fluid but I didnt have any visual leaks. After topping it off 5 or so times I finally realized something was wrong. Just happened to think about the engine oil so I checked the level. WAY too high! Almost coming out of the dip stick! Before I started it was perfect.

So anyway, took the power steering pump off and I guess Im looking at replacing the input seals. I cant find anything on this. I bought a service manual that covers 65-75 ford tractors including the 3400 but it only shows the remote reservoir, doesnt show the integrated pump/reservoir which is what this tractor has. Anyone have any tips for replacing the input seal?

Does DHPN3A674B for the seal kit and C5NN9030D for the filter seem right?
 
If you buy the I&T FO-31 manual for the 3000 it will cover about 95% of your 3400. Available from this site for about $30 or so.
But replacing that seal isn't a hard job. No manual needed.

Ive not tore into it yet, but once I take the gear off is it fairly self explanatory?

That FO-31 says pre 1975, will that work for my 1975?

Ford's official line was that the thousand series, which your 3400 is part of, was made from 1965 through 1974 and the x600 series started production in 1975, but there was some overlap in actual production dates, so your 3400, even if it was made in 1975, should be the same as a 1974 3400 There were slight changes in the individual models between 1965 and 1974 but I don't think that anything changed after early 1973 or so. The FO-31 should cover most everything in your 3400 except a few things that the 3400 had that were unique to it from the ag chassis tractors, like the solid front axle and if yours has the manual reversing or power reversing transmission the trans wouldn't be covered either, but if it has an 8 speed or Select-O-Speed then it would be covered because those transmissions were available in both the Industrial/Utility models and the ag models.
 
Wonder why there isnt just a 3400 service manual? Its like its the red head step child or something. I kinda like it, but I always seem to buy or get unique stuff. Always something different about it.

Ive found that I just need to search for the 3000 when Im looking for parts. Seems that some of the steering is beefed up on the 3400 also. Maybe it was mis info, but I read about it awhile back.
 
Ohh and far as I know it has the 8 speed. Has the high low lever then 8 different gears I have yet to get the hang of changing without grinding... Struggle shifting up unless Im going downhill... Not made it past 3rd in low yet haha
 
The 3400 really is a 3000 for all intents
and purposes.
About the only real difference is the front
axle and peripherals.
This gets a bit esoteric but to spell those
out they would be as follows.
The front bolster is much heavier. It
connects to not only the block but to the
cast iron oil pan which the 3000 does not
have.
The front axle is much heavier. It is not
swept back like the 3000 which gives the
3400 about 3" longer wheel base.
Radius rods are longer and heavier. Tie rods
are longer and heavier. Steering cylinders
use a heavier rod. Steering arms on the
steering Box are bent slightly different so
the 3400 doesn't have quite as tight a
turning radius. Identical steering column
and pump. 3400 used a pair of plates on each
side to put the radius rod socket out
farther from the transmission - about 1/8".
A couple of other differences were the 3400
came standard with a foot throttle. 3400
always used the higher tin setting making
the hood about 1 3/4" higher. Tractor looks
bigger even though it isn't.
3400 left side step plate is shorter. Dunno
why.
The 3400 diesel used a paper air filter
which was mounted in the nose and accessed
via a round cover in the left side of the
nose. 3000 diesel used a wet air filter in
the nose, accessible by removing the grill.
All gassers used the same paper filter
accessible through a round cover in the left
side hood.
Lastly, early 3400s came Blue chassis and
yellow tin, fenders and rims. I think the
later ones were all yellow.
What color is yours?

Ohh don't apologize! I love getting all the information I can! Hopefully Ill never need to replace the tie rods but I do have a massive amount of play where the rods bolt up to the drop pitman arms (not sure if thats the right terminology, but thats what I call it on my Jeeps). Seals at the steering box for both drop pitman arms are leaking also... but Ill deal with that later.

It was yellow but someone has painted over the yellow so now its mostly blue...
 
This no edit feature is killing me.

Forgot to say that our 3400 doesnt have the foot throttle but that doesnt mean it didnt come with it. Someone evidently ripped off the parking brake so the foot throttle may have went with it. Gotta try to find a parking brake setup.
 
I'm not sure what the correct name for those
arms are. I just call them rear steering
arms as there is front steering arms too.
As for tightening up those rear tire rod
ends you have to buy the whole tie rod. I'm
sure they would be a dealer only item and
probably VERY expensive.
What most of us do is buy a set of rear tie
rod ends for a non power steering 3000.
Then cut the old ones off and weld the new
ones on.
Pay attention if you do this as there is a
right and a left tie rod and they need to be
welded on in the right direction.
I always dress them up a little - a bit of
grinding and sanding. Then some bondo, prime
and paint.
Photo shows one I did on my 3000 several
years ago. I think the tie rod ends were
about $13 each from this site.

Thats cool. Ill look into that when I get a chance to tackle the leaking seals on the steering.

Must say I would be very nervous cutting those off haha. Not something I wouldve thought about doing if you hadn't told me about it! No way Ill be buying new bars though.

Would you happen to have a 3000 parking brake setup? Seems your username shows up a lot when searching for that haha
 
Can anyone give me some tips for getting those seals out?

Ive got the gear off and the reservoir off. Tried picking at the seals some but they didnt move.

Do I need to take the four bolts out and remove the pump itself from the housing? I wasnt sure what those four bolts that would normally be inside the reservoir were holding in so i didnt want to take them out without checking.

The filter didnt have any seals on it at all. Should it?
 
Well, couldnt find anything so I just took it apart. It works just like most oil pumps do that Ive taken apart. Just two gears that mesh to pump the oil, very simple.

The seals on the shaft were very hard and brittle. Seals arent here yet so I cant put it back together...





 
Other than oil leaking into crankcase, did you have any other symptoms? My 3550 has a very lazy pump and it only applies power about 5-10% of the time. I haven't used machine enough to verify making oil yet, but I do have to top off frequently.

Nope, power steering actually worked great until it would run out of oil. I could easily turn with 1 finger.

Got the seal in and installed. Hoping Ill have a chance to put it back in this weekend.
