Ford 4000 with intergral power steering

Hi Friends,
I am planning on rebuilding the power steering gear box on my 72 ford 4000. I have the manual and the job appears to be straight forward. I was at the local NH dealer on an unrelated issue and spoke to the service manager who said that 9 out of ten rebuilds fail and advised me to buy a re-manufactured unit instead. The difference is $1500 vs $25 seal and o-ring kit. My unit works fine with the exception of some small leaks. Does anyone have experience with this issue.
Thanks in advance for your replies.

If that is true (and there are a lot of back yard mechanics that may contribute to that) you only have $25 to lose. If it doesn't work already and still doesn't work after rebuild its just $25. The question is; 'do you feel lucky?, well do ya?'

Is it leaking oil out the steering shaft? If not I never tore into one unless there was an issue. Yes I work at a NH dealer and I have never told someone to get a reman. Only reason would be if it's a catastrophic failure.

They don't do any kinda magic time remand them. If you had one with a major failure then yes reman might be most trouble free but if it's just leaking you should have no problem sealing it if your at all mechanical and take the job careful and slow

Thanks for all the replies. I will take it apart at the end of the summer. I was just wondering if there was something unique to the unit that some of you fellows might have heard of. I will post picture and the results of the rebuild after I am done.

Thanks again

I had one of those columns.
I paid $25 for it at a going out of business sale. (Yes twenty five bucks)
I opened it up and could see a lot of wear in the bore of the internal cylinder.
It layed around for a while then my pal Ken wanted it so we traded for something or other.
He brought it in to our local CNH dealer (Carlson Tractor) and had it rebuilt.
Cost him nearly a grand.
It took him a year to finally get around to installing it.
Meanwhile Carlson sold out to Titan Machinery.
I never got involved with it but know it does not work.
And Titan wouldn't honor a year+ old Carlson repair.
So he's SOL on the thing.

Two comments:

1) Every one I've ever re-sealed has been successful, and I've been into literally dozens of these boxes
2) The seal kit from NH will cost you a lot more than $25. Furthermore, not every seal comes in the seal kit. There are two that come to mind that nearly always leak if you don't replace them. Suggest checking the parts manual carefully.

Thanks for your input. The kit I bought is from YT (about $25 with shipping) and looks pretty complete but I will match it up with the diagram before starting the job.

I'm not sure about aftermarket kits, however the ones from NH never included seals #14 and 42 shown in the following link: http://partstore.agriculture.newholland.com/us/parts-search.html#epc::mr64887ar258884

I live on the west coast, so I don't know anyone that can help you. Whatever you do, don't take it to the folks at the local dealer who told you that 9 out of 10 re-seal jobs are unsuccessful. They are either total incompetents or else total crooks who'd rather sell you a new box than a seal kit.

If all else fails, I'll do it if you'd like to ship it across the country.
