4500 backhoe for sale about an hour east of me, owner says runs well but needs one hydraulic hose replaced, asking $3900, anybody want to chime in on the value and what to look for, I could see it being used a lot around my place if I go get it....

I second what RickB says. Mine has been practically indestructible. You will want to look for frame cracks in the loader and hoe
arms (easily patched). They had a bit too much digging power compared to other models and can "hurt" themselves.

+1 on Rick's comments.
Check for diff lock in rear axle, some had it, some didn't. Not a deal breaker, but less likely to get stuck.

Test the steering, the power steering is hidden in the bottom of the front bolster under the hydraulic pump.

Lift front axle off the ground, and grab the wheels at top and bottom and try to shake. If loose, steering can be difficult with heavy load in the bucket. Look close to see if the looseness is in the knuckle bushings, or if the kingpin is moving in the eye on the end of the axle. Kits with new kingpins and bushings are available at reasonable cost. If the kingpin is moving in the axle eye, you will need to use old school blacksmith techniques to heat and beat shrink the eye. Search the old car forums to find info.

Apologize for the unclear pics, the 4500 Ford is not a looker, I'm gonna call the guy this morning

I bought 3 point implements from the owner in years past, nice guy, haven't talked to him yet about the 4500...

The early ones used loader hyd for power steering. Later used separate resivour. I have 2 that are uglier than that 1. Trying to make 1 decent looking 1

That has the largest hoe (755) available for those 4500s. You're going to be real light in the front without the pie weights. Mine has the maximum size weights and it still gets light when carrying anything with the hoe.

Brought the old gal home for $3700, hope I didn't get hurt, needs a hose replaced on front and one on rear and one real cylinder needs a new seal in it, cranks really well, no blowby, good brakes, steers easy, it does need a back seat to be able to sit and use back hoe...got some brush to push out and clean up around the old home place and hoping she will do the job, runs strong, once I get these hydraulic leaks fixed she should be a true work horse..

Yup, had to counterbalance it that way countless times. I've also had stuff in that front bucket so heavy you wouldn't believe. Had to counterweight with stuff in the hoe bucket spread all the way out.

Great buy friend has had one for years he just replaced it with a new ford. He did everything with it basements septic sys. ect.

I'm not a fanatic about keeping things original but I do like to have decent looking equipment, what do ya'll think about me painting her entirely in Ford blue? Don't care much for yellow...

Sure that isn't a "flip seat"? Mine flips back and locks in place to operate the hoe. I think you got a good deal. It looks like all the parts are there which is a good start. Almost looks like mine when I first got it.

(quoted from post at 12:27:31 05/27/16) Sorry, but that would be ugly. When's the last time you saw a blue backhoe of that size?

All blue looks better to me than pale yellow, and blue is better looking than rust

I seen one that had been painted all blue and didn't like it. Not a big fan of yellow but used later model yellow when I painted mine and it looks better than all blue or the early pale yellow IMO.

Yep, it does have a flip seat, when I was first looking it over it appeared to be stationary,

Nice tractor! Similar in appearance to my 3500. i'm currently having the hoe hydraulic cylinders repacked, which are a bear to get apart. I'm with you about the color..... don't care for the yellow.

Ten four FarmerBlair, going to have the 2 cylinders on the rear hoe repacked as well on this one too.....

Do you or anyone else know where i can get a flip seat for a 4500 backhoe. I have looked at every web site that people have told me about and I have not found one yet. I have asked on this site before so I hope I am not making people mad by asking ever so often.

Thanks
Floyd

Maybe painted a proper blue paint scheme, not just dipped in blue. Our 3400 was yellow then I did it over in blue and did the loader white like ag tractors and it looks great. Same with my Deere 210C loader backhoe, did it over in green like again tractors and decals to match and looks great.

There are eight different dealers on that link I sent with 4500's. You can check 3500's and some 4400 It's possible some others have the same flip seat.

OK Thanks

I saw a diesel sell for $4900 at an estate auction a few months ago. It was in in better than "avergage" shape.

If the leaking hose is inside the hoe, get ready for some real work. I have a 67' gas. If it works, it's worth $3900 IMO.

enjoying the pics and info, have a 4500 coming if I can get my buddy movin on it, look forward to seeing what it will do
