600 hydraulics.....it's an uphill battle.

Wow, thought I had my hydraulic problems licked on Saturday. I yanked the unloaded valve and cleaned and lubed it, checked for proper drag on the o-ring. Re-installed and all seemed well. Lift operated best yet and I happily mowed for about an hour. Feather light pinpoint control. Lift operated at lower rpms than before....I installed new wobble shaft seal, packed needle bearing, new pump gaskets, balls, and Springs. Sunday I go to mow and lift won't raise.

2500 psi pressure gauge should arrive this week. Gonna keep trying. Getting pretty good at yanking top cover. Will probably drain reservoir and clean the sump again. Anyone running an external filter?

Pump seems to keep prime. Anytime I pull the bleed screw it flows. Right now my pressure level is suspect and I am going to pull the unloader valve again and de-burr the edges of the journals. Will mic it out good and make a drawing in case I have to make a new one. I'm thinking my pump pressure may not be high enough to unseat the valves after they have set up. We'll see. I'm in the tractor cheap so if I can't get it I can step out of it and not get hurt.

Well you were right. Pulled the bleed screw this afternoon, dry as a bone. Pulled pump and cleaned up mating services and reinstalled. Bled pump and boom , lift jumped up. We'll see how long it functions. Got the back pond mowed up nice.

If you continue to loose prime, you can try hard plumbing in a ball valve to the bleeder port. Transition into clear plastic tubing, then route the tubing to the fill port under the seat on the left side. You can then start the tractor, open the valve until the bubbles in tube subside, close the valve, and the lift will work. Repeat as needed.

It this works, I would start thinking about replacing the wobble shaft and seal on the pump. That is what usually causes a loss of prime problem.

Thanks for the tip. I put a new seal and gaskets in the pump, along with the large and small Springs. I may not have done a very great job. I will take another look at it and get new o rings. If I shut the tractor off with the lift up, the lift will slowly settle a pop at a time, you can hear it pop very softly each little bit that it settles. The noise seems to be coming from the reservoir, not the pump.

When you worked on the pump, did you replace the bearings, wobble shaft and shaft seal?. Those parts do not come with the rebuild kit.

What usually causes a loss of prime problem is the wobble shaft. Years of use wears a groove in the shaft where it runs on seal. When you turn off the tractor, oil in the pump wants to drain back into the sump. When the shaft seal leaks, the oil is able to move and it pulls air into the pump. That is why you loose prime when the tractor sits overnight.

I repacked the needle bearings, and replaced the shaft seal, piston Springs, balls, small return Springs, and gaskets. I will revisit my work and try to do a better job. I'll mic the shaft and see what kind of shape it's in. Thanks for the tips.
