Voltage resistor

Hi All I thought i had this fixed on my 1958 ford 621 I put a new alt on do to bad bearing and i thought it was burning up points some how. I was in woods on sat when it started acting up again. It's been great for about a month on short use at home. Anyway i reajusted the points and cleaned them and it ran for alittle bit but not great. I set points at 25 and after it starts running crapy they are real wide but never loosing up. This tractor was 12 volt when i got it in 07 and till different eng now i have put four sets of points in it. This tractor never had a voltage resistor before but should it have one and is that the reason the points are going bad?. Thanks. D

depends.

does it have a real 12v coil?

if you don't know.. I'd just get the 12v coil and be done with it.

I'd also change that condensor if it is burning points wide quickly... that's a sign of an open condensor.

check dist shaft for play.. that WILL cause the gap to change randomly. check mounting plate that points sit on for play and try to turn it back and forth.

make sure your not running china points as they will burn ALL THE TIME. Use American brands that have tungsten on the points that DONT burn.

Make sure your condenser is good or points can burn.

bad spark plug wires can raise the voltage of the coil on discharge and that also will reflect on the primary side and cause points to arc excessively.

And you can measure the resistance of the coil on the primary side to see if its a 6 volt or 12 volt coil.

Thanks guys for all the info, Each time i have replaced points I have put new condenser has well. I will ck thoses few things. Thanks again. D

Now days it is common to have a bad new condenser. I have not changed a condenser in over 10 years due to that problem
