Ford 4000 Lift arm operation

Hello All: I have a Ford 4000. I was recently trying to remove some weeds with the box scraper attachment. It seems like the arms had no down force and when the weeds got thick it would just lift up a few inches and glide over. I haven't noticed this in previous years while removing weeds. I tried in both draft mode and also standard mode getting the same results. The only thing I did not try was to adjust the flow control screw on the right side of the tractor. My property is about 3 hours away and I'm just trying to get some Ideas before I head back. Anyone have any Ideas?
 
Very few tractors have down pressure on the 3-point.
The flow control won't affect what you're doing.
Onething tthat might help is changing the length of
your top link. That will change the angle of attack of
the blade, and may make it bite in enough to pull the
weeds out. Do you have sacrifiers/rippers for your
box blade?
 
Yes, I have rippers. I have tried to adjust the top link both ways as far as I could hoping to get the blade to dig in. What happens is that the weeds fold over and the scraper starts to ride up over them. I have not had this problem before. We had more rain than usual this year so the weeds were thicker. I think the disc would take them down, but I don't really want to bury the seeds for more weeds next year.
 
Always mention whether you have a 3 cylinder
4000 or a 4 cylinder. They are completely
different animals.
In this case we know you have a 3 cyl
because the 4 cyl doesn't have flow control.
A box blade is a poor tool for weed control.
Far better would be a brush mower. A disc
may in fact do a better job - if you do it
early enough so the weeds have not matured
enough to seed. Weekly passes with a disk
would prevent pretty much anything from
maturing. A weighted disc would also cut up
root systems. Fordfarmer is correct - Ford
tractors do not have down pressure on the 3
point. None of them do.
 

Since you say that it used to work for you, the difference could be something else such as moisture. The blade will cut intoi the dirt that the weeds are anchored into a lot better with moisture in the soil than when dry.
 
Readjust the top link to tilt the box blade back a bit. This will result in a more aggressive cut.

To remove turf, you will need to lower the rippers.

Raise the box up and check the cutter blade for sharpness, after a few years of dirt and gravel work the blade got dull on mine and I had to unbolt it and flip it over to get a good cutting edge again.
Also make sure you don't have it tilted back to far causing the rear cutter to hold the front cutter up off to ground.
If I want to do some serious cutting I'll run the front a couple inches lower than the back
 
Sometimes it helps to add weight to the back of the box blade to make it cut better. I often add 6 to 8 front suitcase weights to my box blade by hanging them on the
top edge. The tractor knows it is heavy but works better. Hope this helps.
 
like said, moisture and what kind of dirt you have can make it easy or flat out impossible.
With my clay, a day or even hours of it drying out too much..and implements will just throw sparks..lol. a little exaggeration...but not much.

Sometimes it takes a couple of attacks. I have a very heavy boxblade with long rippers. Put the rippers all the way down, tilt the box heavily so it is basically just a ripper implement.
After busting it up some, then just use the boxblade normally to skim off the weeds. (I use a rake, with a hand on the lift control, so I just get the churned up weeds and not too much dirt.)

Reseeding itself? Unless you are a real farmer with real equipment and poisons(I'm not)......I wouldn't worry about it....You have no chance...grass/weeds will always win.
You know that old saying about how only rats and cockroaches will survive WW3....I'd add....grass/weeds.
