Hi guys i am new with tractors i just purchased a 1955 ford 850 with a bucket and backhoe it starts overheating when using backhoe. any ideas i changed thermostat already. radiator good shape.also i need help with what fluids i need to change and what kind i use.

Over heating can be as simple as a fan belt that is not tight enough or a block that is clogged up or radiator clogged up. I would check the belt and then if that is not it. Drain the cooling system and then fill with vinegar and run it till good and warm let it cool then rig up a way to hook a garden hose to the block drain and back flush it with the garden hose

What about if it has a Fan Shroud? Or the water pump fins could be eaten away?

Just other things to look at....

Even better yet, just down in the rad while tractor is running and see if the water is churning. I should be moving and churning around. HTH

Bingo.

Most of the water pumps on these old tractors have been rebuilt many times.

Finding a water pump that does not pump well due to eroded impeller fins is no longer uncommon.

Greetings!

As for engine oil, I use Shell Rotella T 15W-40 for my '55 860. If you have a spin-on filter, it'll take a Motorcraft FL-1A (or whatever cross-references with that filter).

As for the trans/hydraulics/final drive, you can use a UTF that meets Ford 134D spec (should say on the label). There's a drain plug under each sump. Fillers are on the trans next to the shifter; for the hydraulic sump on the left side of the housing under your left, uh, butt cheek (as you're sitting on the seat); and for the final drive on the top right of the rear housing. As for checking levels, there's a dipstick for the hydraulics on the left by the pto lever; for the trans, a pipe plug I think somewhere down by the right running board (having trouble remembering exactly where that one is); and for the final drive, there's a pipe plug on the lower left-hand side of the housing, easily visible from the rear of the machine -- except of course having a backhoe on might make it harder to get to!

Hope that helps. Good luck with the overheating problem.
