Ford 651 Intermittent Lift Failure

Hoping someone can help me with my 1959 Ford 651. I got it recently. We really need to get it running for the farm. It was outside and sorely neglected before it came to me. The lift worked when I got it. I replaced all the fluids, and the lift stopped working. I primed the pump. Still nothing.
I pulled off the lift cover and replaced a bunch of O-rings and what not. Still didn't work. We have been using it some to pull a trailer around. Then the lift started working, then it stopped. It has done that several times now. When the lift does work, it is strong and solid, does exactly what it supposed to do, in either control setting. When it does not work, it does not work at all. Just doesn't budge, in either control setting. Any ideas?
Thanks,
Alexis

I'm thinking that you are loosing prime in your pump. Probably due to a suction side air leak. One thing to try is plumb in a clear plastic tube from the pump bleed port back to the sump fill plug under the seat. Start the tractor. Oil should be flowing but no bubbles. If you see a steady stream of bubbles that never go away or only go away after the tractor runs for a while you have confirmed a suction side leak.

If you hard pump in a ball valve at the pump, you can run until the bubbles stop, close the ball valve and the lift should work normally until the tractor sits overnight.

I'd give this a try and see what happens. If you keep getting bubbles you will probably have to replace the wobble shaft oil seal in the pump.

Your problem maybe a sticking unloader valve and they can stick then free up and work for a while then stick again because a simple jar can free them up.

If it fails the bubble test, post back. Occasional you get lucky and its the auction oring on the manifold, next culprit is the shaft seal.

If it turns out maybee a sticking unloaded, consider draining your oil if still clean then dumping in a gallon of diesel, a couple quarts ATF, and a couple pints rubbing alcohol and letting it run around the yard for a few victory laps.
