Ford powermaster wiring

Hello
I am in need of help wiring my Ford 861. I am converting from a 6 to a 12 volt system. I added a ignitor electronic ignition some time ago and it ran good. I bout a 12 volt conversion kit from Yesterday's tractor that states it is a single wire alt. My tractor does not have an ammeter only the red light on the dash. At this time I have removed all wiring and the 6 volt regulator so I need to start from scratch. The kit came with a 6 volt resistor. The coil i have is currently 6 v and the selenoid is a 4 post and terminal block is 2 post. If anyone could help me out I would greatly appreciate it. My knowledge on wiring is very basic so simple instruction with detail would be great.
Thanks in advance.

Hey keystone, I'm going through almost the same thing.I bought a new wire harness, and a new
single wire alternator. In both cases no wiring diagram. Where can one be found?? Let me
know if you find one!! thanks.....Jim in N.M.

If you have a 6v electronic ignition.. you need to get a 12v electronic ignition.

My post here will only address converting your 6v to a 12v via 1 wire alternator, assuming you have points.

battery installed negative to ground, or match alternator polarity ( neg ground unless you paid for something special )

battery to solenoid big cable, solenoid other big cable to starter.

wire from battery on solenoid to terminal block.

wire from terminal block to key, wire from key to : coil : 1 small terminal on solenoid

wire from trans mounted thumb switch to other small terminal on solenoid.

wire crom other terminal on coil to the side entrance to the distribuitor.

wire from charge stud of the alternator to the battery hot side.. can be at the solenoid for easy connection.

if you have headlamps, wire from terminal block to a headlamp switch with integral or inline fuse. wire from switch to both headlamps. make sure headlamp bases have good grounds to tin and tin to frame, or add a helper ground wire from frame to bolt up under the bases.

That would cover you on a 6v to 12v points system.

from there you can use the new instructions that come with your new 12v neg ground ei kit and install per instructions they give you.. your old 6v positive ground ei kit won't work with this setup.

Normally i'd say get a napa ic14sb coil.. but in this case.. use whatever coil, etc, that your ei kit says to use..

Thanks Sound Guy. Is there a digram that shows a 1 wire alt set up with out an Ammeter and only the red light.
Again my wiring skills are lacking so a diagram would go a long way.

Thanks

1) I do not believe in one wire alternators so I did away with all those diagrams.
2) If you truly want to try and wire it with only one wire just delete the other two wires coming off the alternator.
3) I also think it is best to replace the coil with a 12 volt version. The starter solenoid on these tractors do not support 6 volt coils. This eliminates the inline resistor to the coil. But if you want to use your old 6 volt coil just add the resistor in the wire that runs from the terminal block to the + coil terminal.
4) If you want to use the dash warning light you must wire the alternator with 3 wires.

So study this diagram and ask questions if you are still stumped.

Thanks for the help. I have the tractor running and hooked the alt up as a three wire. The one thiing is that with out the key the sarter button will try to turn the engine, it won't start with out the key but it will turn the starter. Should it do that or do i still have something wrong.

Thanks again.

f the key had to be on before you rewired it in order for starter to function then you wired it wrong or maybe you changed the solenoid to the wrong type. However, if it never worked correctly then it may have had the wrong solenoid type all along. Where do those two wires from the two small solenoid terminals connect at other end?

You have the small wire on starter relay wired to the wrong side of the terminal block, it should be on the side that is only hot with the key on. Sounds like you have it on the side the battery wire connects to.
