pto slipping out of gear

My 196? 4cyl Ford 2000 PTO occasionally slips out of gear while I am bush hogging. Is this common? Is there a Fix or adjustment? OR should I just invest in a bungie cord?
Thanks,
Tex

Could be as simple as a dented ball sticking or the spring getting weak tha tsits under it or PTO end play getting to great due to bearing wear or the snap ring has jumped out of the groove and needs put back in

So where do I look for problems, is it in the PTO assembly at the back, or where the lever is attached to the tranny.?
Thanks,
Tex

Also, see if the pto shaft moves back and forth. You can do that by hand and pulling, with the tractor shut off of course. If there is excess play, likely it needs to be pulled, which is a relatively easy repair job. If there are signs of oil leaking past the shaft on the differential housing it would need a seal anyways. Drain the differential, hydraulic compartment and the transmission, remove the 4 bolts on the back of the differential, the shaft will then come out. Part #5 or #6 can displace and allow the shaft to move excessively, which also plays a role in the seal failing if I recall this correctly. Also, part #8, the sleeve, I believe I used the appropriate size/length of pipe with the inside diameter allowing the shaft to fit inside it, to push the sleeve to where it goes. Its been 3 years since I've done one of these,

Can be either place since the detent ball is in the PTO shiftier area and the PTO end play and bearing and snap ring are in the plate that holds the PTO shaft in at the back of the tractor

Whut he said... My other 2 cents worth is the very last possible issue I would even dream about being a issue is the detent ball and spring... If it were the issue it would not be a simple repair... I have never seen the detent be a a issue but see folks use it as a pattern answer to all PTO issues... Its not the place to start diagnosing a PTO issue...

Tex,
Pretty common problem on all the smaller Fords. Often caused by a pto shaft that is too long or the sliding halves of the pto shaft on the implement are stiff from lack of grease or damage. The halves should slide in and out freely.
As the others have said, check your splined pto shaft. Grab it and pull in/out. Look for movement.
More than about 3/16" and that's your problem.
If loose, drain the oil, remove 4 bolts and slide the shaft out. Check the circlip that holds the bearing in place. I would go ahead and replace the seal while you have it out.
With the circlip out drop the long end of the shaft hard on a board on the concrete. The bearing housing will drop off and you can renew the seal. They probably sell the seal here at YT. Just a few $.
Easy job.
