Ford Powermaster 871

I am looking to purchase a Ford Powermaster 871. The tractor has a frontend loader and the tractor itself looks like it is in great shape, like it was restored. The issue is it has the SOS. Gears 1-4 work fine as well as 9-10 and both Reverses. Gears 5-8 do not engage, the owner was told band #2 of 3 needs to be adjusted. Does this sound right? How difficult is it to do this adjustment? Should I run from this deal? any advice is helpful.

Tell him to adjust them from what I understand the sos are $ to fix . there are some experts that will give you some good information . let them know price of tractor it would need to be pretty cheap.

Verify the gears that do not work and if they are completely non functional.

Could be simple but must be CERTAIN of the gears.

At that price should be able to buy a decent working 5 speed with live pto, I wouldn't even consider a SOS transmission unless about half that price and working well

I fixed one with 5-8 gone for a 10 cent pin. Could be a band adjustment, the pin I just mentioned, or something worse. But, in my experience the most common failure that causes loss of these ratios is the 10 cent pin. I'd want to know for sure, but if that's all that's wrong with it, don't let the naysayers and 5 speeders deter you.

Personally, I'd never ever buy a 4 or 5 speed unless it was just about given to me. I'd take the SOS every time.

For either of those numbers I would run and run super fast. An SOS when working as it should are OK at best but one with problems can be a money pit big time and some parts are hard to find if you can find them and well they cost an arm and leg

Anything of that vintage can be a big money pit. An SOS of DDC ilk, which we're not sure if this particular tractor has, is no more prone to problems than a gear tractor of the same era, and at it's worst is OK!

We don't know you or your skill level.
And we don't know what is wrong with the transmission. It might be a 10 cent pin.
Are you willing to pull the loader off the tractor and take a foray into unknown territory that many of us here who have been messing with Fords for years would not do?
Call me a naysayer if you wish. But I think discretion is still the better part of valor.
If the transmission was working perfectly I would be willing to give him $2500 for that tractor.
If it is not working perfectly I wouldn't give half that amount.

It will take some work by someone knowledgeable. Tell your location and perhaps someone here can tell you of an SOS mechanic near you.

Too much for a currently broken SOS. Granted mine doesn't have a loader, but I paid way less for it and it's fully functioning.

Iam interested in what kind of work does it take to replace 5 cent pin . does tractor need to be split explain so
if I come across cheap sos.

There is a bit of a range. Some can be replaced in about a minute. Some would take a minute plus eight hours by a mechanic familiar with the SOS
