Ford 801 series select o speed transmission

Hey all -
New here - love reading advice from those who are further along in their skill than me.

I have opportunity to buy a 1959-1963 801 series ford tractor with the select a speed transmission. Seller indicates that gears 5-8 are not fully engaging. I'm reading that there are some bands (2/3) that may need to be adjusted.

What is this tractor worth in this shape? It has a front end loader and pto/3 point work well. Looks to be in good shape other than tranny problem.

Are there compatible transmissions to swap into this tractor? I'm not finding much on the google.

Thanks in advance for any help.

blessings,
D

That would make it a model 871 or 881. The SOS some think are good as long as they work like they should but can be a money pit if they do not. One ;like that to me would not be worth more then around $1500 and that is if the rear tires are very good.

Ditto ,

I have never even seen a SOS but when I bought my 3000 I also bought an FO 31 manual . I read every page and I could see the SOS trans is very complicated with 100's of parts . Most of those parts appear to be hard to find or expensive . I see used shift cables going for $200 on ebay . I could be wrong but I don't have money to gamble with either .

Thunk,
What is your skill level?
If you could overhaul the auto trans in your
pickup you could overhaul one of these.
They're not rockets...
That said, I have never opened one up, and
probably won't, unless it's a junker that
will be scrapped after. Just to have a look
and practice on one. I have opened and fixed
a couple of 8 speeds and they worked
afterwards. I consider myself to have
average wrenching skills.
As to what transmission will interchange,
pretty much any 600, 800, 601, 801 and early
2000, 4000 trans from 1955 - 64 will
interchange. There's a few issues you need
to be aware of before you do the swap so ask
for more info if you go that route.
Value is pretty much impossible to determine
based on what little info we have before us.
That tractor with good functioning SOS and
good tin, paint, tires, etc will top out
about $2.5 - $3K if running good.
With SOS issues I would guestimate half of
that number.
