old 4000 Carb leaking

If the carb is working correctly, when engine is off and I remove the bottom nut, some gas should come out, then stop, correct. If it continues to come out, float is stuck or needle blocked, correct?
Gas is dripping slowly when parked.
If that's the case, would you rebuild carb or just try to clean? Engine runs good.
Thanks.

Remove the cap from the fuel tank to vent and open the shutoff valve. Then, if you remove the bowl drain (I think what you called the bottom
nut) fuel should continue to drain. If it stops, then you have something plugged up either in the tank strainer, the line, or in the carb.
Normally, if fuel is leaking when the tractor is stopped then there is likely a problem inside the carb like a bad float or needle and seat,
or some other problem.
Note: the above assumes 4-cylinder with gravity flow fuel system since you said old Ford. -Will

That is incorrect. If the drain is open and gas is constantly flowing out then the float cannot rise to close the valve.

When the drain is closed the gas will collect in the bowl and allow the float to rise, which will shut the valve.

If when you say the nut on the bottom of the carb it that is the drain plug gas should flow as long as there is gas in the tank since with the drain plug out gas can not fill up the float bowl so the float will NEVER float. If it is not the newer 4000 with a fuel pump.
Now if you get gas out when it is not running and the fuel tank shut off is open then in that case you have a float problems or a needle/seat problem since when it is not running the float should shut off the gas but many old tractor tend to do that and that is why people say to shut the gas off when parked

Here it is...it was full of gas going up into engine. This is a 4 cylinder 4000, so what do I have...what rebuild kit?
Thanks again for the help.

Are you turning gas off under the tank, if yes, then bad valve and bad float valve maybee if it was backing up in engine

On the back side of that carb should be a brass tag and on it should be a TXS then a number. If you have an O'Reilly's auto parts store take that number and ask for a carb kit. O'Reilly's handles a Walker brand kit that is pretty good for around $20. That carb looks a lot like the carb I have on my 841 and amy even be the same kit but I do not remember the kit numbers any more. I want to say it is a 778-505A

I alwayse turn gas tank valve off, but when I disconnected gas line it was dripping pretty good so carb was filling even with gas valve off. So need a new gas shut off also.

After they did away with the sediment bowl under the tank the shut off valve has ben a problem. I have had trouble with the shut off on my 841 and many people put an inline shut off on due to that problem

The sediment bowl under the tank is the best way to fix these some ad a brass ball valve inline with good results.
