ford red/orange paint

working on a couple of tractor restorations. (861 and 961). Want to paint some parts. I use to get Van Sickle 479 Ford red/orange. I was able to get it at a local farm store. For some reason they no longer carry that color. They still carry the 8N red and new Holland red but not the red orange. Said they my be able to order but sounded like they really didn't want to though. Anyhow was wondering what kind of paints you use and where you purchase.

Most hardware stores will mix a color in enamel that you picked from an index . The better stores that sell just paint will match your sample if you prefer .

You can take a part in and have them match it . I found a red color I liked in rustoleum spray and spray painted a part , let it dry , and had them match it in a gallon . Touch up was easy because I already had the perfect color spray paint

I think Ken has the best idea. I have a 1961 871 SOS, and got tired of trying to find the red/orange that it was originally. Had the tractor repainted 8N red, and now life is simple.

I took the battery box off and took it to an auto parts store that does a lot of paint. They matched digitally. cheap paint is fine over a five hour prep job but when you put a lot of time into prep you want it to last. Cheap red will darken or fade after 2-3 years.

Any red will fade over time.
Unless you keep it in the shade/under a canopy all the time. ;)
Beautiful tractor!

Beautiful tractor!

Thanks Royse. The irritating thing is that I touched up some places a few months after painting with some of the original paint but without hardener, and after two years or so those spots were much darker.

thanks all, I finally found the Van sickle paint I wanted. I've always had good results with it and can buy rattle can for small touch ups. the paint is very reasonable 30 bucks a gallon, same paint on the net anywhere from 50 to 90 buck plus shipping. had to drive a few extra mile but that not a problem. like to drive and weather is beautiful. Thanks again
