Re: SOS PTO Handle

I think that I got it fixed this evening. I will have to hook up an implement in order to know for sure. It was the rod or shaft that the T handle attaches to that had threaded off the cable. I had to thread a little out of the tranny housing in order to have a half inch for the handle shaft to thread onto. For awhile after I repaired the inside linkage and the handle wasn't tight I had turned it CW a turn a couple of times and that had threaded it part way off, then finally it came out. I cleaned up both the cable end and the inside of the shaft, and put blue Loctite on it to make it stay.

Larry. Just wondering if you have a source for a good 64 4000 DDC input shaft (and, maybe a pump).

I plan to retire (again) at the end of this year. My retirement project is my 64, 4000 S-O-S utility.

I do not think that the gasoline engine has ever been rebuilt as it has considerable blow by, though it starts and runs well, has good oil pressure and uses no oil. I plan to install a VERY low hour 192 industrial engine from a power unit that I found a few years ago. The 192 is a natural gas unit (high compression) that I have converted to gasoline. It will probably produce close to 65 PTO HP.

The S-O-S in my 4000 has likely also not been overhauled. It operates well in all gears but when really hot will not always pull at low (below 800) RPM. As a result, I plan to rebuild it when I install the 192. I expect it needs a pump and have no idea what the input shaft looks like. I would like to replace it at the same time if it shows signs of wear.

This is going to be my hobby tractor, though I may use it to pull a 6' cutter from time to time. It has PS, dual remotes and I have a perfect set of PA rims for it as well as 4 brand new 13.6X28 tires, a new set of six loop rims and a set of Ford dual wheel adapters. I also have a full set of front and rear weights for it.

I've rebuilt automotive automatic transmissions before and plan to rebuild the S-O-S myself. My biggest concern is the condition of the input shaft and pump.

Would you mind coming over and holding my hand when I change the filter in my 1961 871 SOS? I've changed the fluid, adjusted the bands, and bought a filter from Dennis Carpenter. Now I'm trying to build up the nerve to pull the top cover. :D

Sorry, Dean! I sold the shaft I had several years ago, assuming that's a C3NN 7006 B transmission. I do still have the pump, but it's condition is unknown to me. The C0NN 7006 B shaft is different than the C3NN which yours likely is that late. I don't have it either.

Dean, you must be aware of the aftermarket shaft that is being made? I think that it is Smith's Old Fords?

bought a filter from Dennis Carpenter. :D

Are they making filters again or is it old stock?

Dennis Carpenter is having them made again. They're listed on his website and in his catalog.
