Starter bendix jamming on 861

Model 660

The starter will lock up every now and then on my 861 gas. I
can loosen The bolts on the starter and take a thin flat punch
and separate the starter from the tranny and it's fine until the
next time. What is jamming? Bendix? Is the newer style
bendix without the big spring better than the old style? Any
help appreciated.

You may have burrs on the ring gear causing that or the bendex is going bad or combo of both

It is some times caused by lubrication of the Bendix. They cannot have any lubricant on them because it attracts clutch dust which will make them stick. You can use graphite powder.

But you don't want a lot of graphite powder around an electric motor, as it conducts electricity and can cause gremlins.

Next oil change, I'm gonna pull the starter, check it. I got another starter with the newer style bendix. If it's in better shape, I'll switch out. Thanks everyone
