Early 4000 diesel - oil pump

I have an old style Ford 4000 4 cylinder diesel tractor. The serial number is obliterated so I don't know the exact year.

I drained the oil a couple of days ago, and a piece of metal fell out of the drain hole. The metal is triangular in shape, with each side being about an inch long. I pulled the oil pan today to see what is going on in there. It turns out that I can't match up any of the parts diagrams for the oil pump with what is actually in the engine. The piece of metal that fell out is from a pan that mounts above the oil pick up and covers the rotating parts of the oil pump. The pan is held onto the pump mechanism with two small bolts.

The oil pick up has a screen filter. Some vintages of these engines have a round, screen filter that actually mounted onto the drain plug. My tractor does not have that arrangement. The oil pick up is rigidly mounted and ends up almost in contact with the bottom of the oil pan, directly above the drain plug.

It doesn't look to me like it is going to hurt the engine with that small triangular piece of the metal missing from the little pan that is between the oil pick up and the rotating parts of the oil pump.

The block casting number is CONN 6015J, so I'm sure it's a 172 cu. in. engine, but I'm not at all certain why the oil pump is so different from all of the parts pictures I've looked at on the New Holland website. I can't order a new little pan since it is not pictured in any of the parts diagrams that I've looked at.

Have you any ideas?

Thanks,

Shaun,

Thank you for your reply. I'm a little bit familiar with a balancer on a crank shaft, but I think that you might be referring to something else.

Is there a balancer that is part of the oil pump?

Thanks again. I need all of the help I can get.

Sean,

Thanks for the response. I went to the New Holland dealer this morning and looked at their parts catalog. It is very different from the online version at the New Holland website. Their catalog shows the exact style of oil pump that is installed in my tractor. No amount of searching on the New Holland site displayed the pump that I have.

The little "cover" that has the broken piece is called a baffle. The part is no longer available and the mechanic at the dealer suggested that I just put the oil pan back on and forget about it. He felt that the small piece that is broken out of the baffle would not result any problem worth dealing with.

So, I ordered a pan gasket, and plan to put the tractor back together next week when the gasket comes in, and just trust that it's going to be okay.
