641 Valve lash caps

Hey guys I need some help.

Bought a 58 641 for a song. It would boil the coolant in a matter of minutes but not because it was hot. Head gasket leaking between the cylinder and cooling ports forcing exhaust into the cooling system making it boil over. Ran good but needed a head gasket real bad. So i pulled the head and took it to the machine shop to check for cracks and surface the head while it was off.

Turns out that he took .008 off of the head to make her flat again. I was lucky that it wasn't cracked because it had obviously been hot at some point.

When I dropped it off 3 months ago, he handed me the valve lash caps and said "take these so I don't lose them"

Guess what......I picked up the head today and vaguely recall cleaning out my garage in a total fit of rage about a month ago and looking at the bag of lash caps while mumbling to myself "what are these? Oh well if I don't remember they can't be too important" followed by me most likely chucking them in the trash.

Obviously they were on there for a reason. I think there were 8 but I could be wrong. Any suggestions on where to find some or what size or can I adjust the valves without them.

If memory serves me they are used to take up slack for wear or are designed to be a where point.

Should I put it together and try to adjust the valves without them and only spend the money if it proves necessary?

Keep in mind that this all started with a head gasket and now my stupidity is putting every gasket on it along with rebuilding the carb, new water pump, radiator, thermostat, battery, electronic ignition, intake/exhaust manifold, exhaust, wiring, fan, hoses, oil filter spin on kit and so on.

Moral of that is a couple hundred dollar fix has rapidly turned into a $1000 project because i want to get on it and mow not work on it mow and work on it some more.

All advise is welcome thanks in advance.

I think that there are just four. When I got a head done they got new ones and I got mine back. If you still need them I could send them to you.
