Drain plug/inspection cover for 64 Ford 2000

Folks I have a 1964 Ford 2000 tractor w/ gas engine/4 speed trans. Appears I have a trans fluid leak at the inspection hole cover/drain plug on bottom of trans case. Appears to be a small leak and only leaks after tractor has been run a bit. Questions are;
1) what is the purpose of the drain plug/inspection plate?
2) Is this piece leaking common in old ford tractors and how do I fix it?

Thanks

If you are speaking of the irregular shaped plate held in place with 5 (4?) bolts and a dowel pin, this is the access for the relief valve.

Failure to replace the O rings on the relief valve and dowel pin and gasket will allow leaks.

Furthermore, use of silicone rather than a proper gasket (available only from CNH) WILL cause silicon to get into the hydraulic valves and the check valves in the pump. DON'T DO IT.

Are you sure it's a 4 speed and not 5 speed? The 4 speed had no plate on the bottom.

As Dean says there is a plate on the bottom of the 3 point hydraulic sump, but that is on the bottom of the rear axle center housing, not the transmission.

The 5 speed has a rectangular plate on the bottom of the bell housing at the front of the trans case, and that plate has a hole in the center that is supposed to have a loose cotter pin in it that rattles around to keep the hole free of dirt. The bell housing is normally dry, but if the rear of the engine or the front of the transmission leak into that area the fluid is supposed to be able to drip out of the hole with the cotter pin to keep the clutch from getting contaminated. The 4 speed also has a hole with a cotter pin, but that hole is in the bottom of the main tranny case itself and there is no plate.
