Ford 9700 2WD opinion ?

Guys,

Looking at buying a 9700 2WD.
It looks pretty good, complete with weights and all original.
Intention is to use it for some haymaking in summertime, not planning to clock major hours on this beauty.

But, is there something I should know about these before I buy it, things I should check perhaps ?
Is the gearbox synchronized on these ones ? easy to shift or not ?

Many thanks in advance,

Roel from Belgium.

I don't have any experience with those big boys but some folks love them.

According to the parts site the 9700 had a non-syncro transmission, either an 8 speed, or in some countries in Europe a 7 speed, as they deleted the top speed due to regulations in some countries there (particularly Germany) that had a top speed limit for tractors and they could not sell them there if they could go any faster than that limit. The parts site also shows dual power, but I don't know if all of the 9700's had it or if it was an option. The dual power was a hydraulically controlled high/low gear setup at the front of the transmission that did not affect the rest of the transmission in terms of being non-syncro.

They're a good tractor, if not high houred and worn out. Cylinder walls can suffer cavitation, like any Ford that age, if coolant conditioner hasn't been used. Transmission is improved over previous models. Most have Dual Power. Cabs are a BIG improvement over previous models. Check the rear hubs to make sure they're still tight on the axles. They sometimes come loose and wallow out.

They are a good tractor. No complicated electronics to go wrong. As FF says, engine can suffer from cavitation if coolant conditioner isn't used. Injector pump needs regular oil changes. Transmission is not Syncro, so you need to double-de-clutch and use foot throttle to shift on the move, but they shift pretty easy when you get the hang of that. Dual Power is a clutchless hi/lo shift.....very useful for baling etc. Cab is reasonably comfortable....better if a/c is working. Do the usual checks that you would on any older tractor....hydraulics work, PTO operates and stops, DP shifts ok, steering etc.
Buy it right, keep maintained and you can work it for pretty much zero depreciation. Chris
