881 selectospeed filter

Has anyone found out the micron size of the filter for the early sos? I was wondering as I want to mount an external filter for ease of maintenance and I would like to be sure I use something close.

Thanks,
Brian

Though I cannot help regarding the S-O-S filter media, I, too, have contemplated an external spin-on filter as well as a front mounted oil cooler for early S-O-S application.

The internal, after-thought filter is in the return line so just about any hydraulic filter would suffice and it would be relatively easy to plumb one externally by routing a line through one of the machining plugs in the transmission casting and routing the return line back to the sump through the fill port.

It's an interesting project that would address two of the issues with the early S-O-S.

I was thinking how to go through the casting for the line and being able to have a good seal on both sides of the casting.

As far as the return of the cooled oil, I was thinking about putting that through one of the round access covers on the side of the housing.

I am also thinking about checking to see if the cover (where the hydraulic dipstick is in) is the same size as the access covers on the sos if it would work so it would be real easy to check the fluid level in the sos.

Well I adjusted the bands today, big improvement on tranny(hasn't been adjusted since 1968 and not a good job by the ford dealer).

Have a lot more maintenance to do, just keep moving forward.

I am going to mount an external spin-on filter along with an oil cooler sometime this summer when tractor is not being used.

I will try and post pictures during the installation so other can see how to do it.

(quoted from post at 21:21:25 04/07/16) Dennis Carpenter sells an SOS filter, its a direct replacement for the internal filter.

Fantastic! I got one from New Holland years ago, but they weren't available anywhere for a few years. Looks right, good price, would love to hear some reviews when folks give them a try.

What is the best way to flush a sos tranny? Oil hasn't been changed for a long time. Do I dare use some diesel fuel(add a gallon into the tranny?) and run it through the gears a few times and drain or just use fresh oil?

Brian

I sure as heck wouldn't even THINK of flushing a SOS transmission with anything. Only fluid that belongs in there is the M 2C41 Ford hydraulic oil (no longer made) or its modern replacement, 134 hydraulic oil. My manual says to change SOS oil and filter every 1200 hours. I guess if I felt guilty, I'd change it every other year, which for me, would be around 400 hours.

Don't flush it, just run it and get it good and hot, and drain it and remove the mesh screen in the bottom left side of the SOS.

If you do that annually, it will clean itself out. At least that's been my experience with mine, over the last 9 years.

Reason I was asking about flushing it out is the last time oil was changed(and this is MY fault) was when a dealer worked on it in 1968. I have kept oil filled to level but that's all.

Check the mesh screen in the drain when you drain the fluid, if its not clogged you should be gtg, get it good and warm before you drain it though.

I wouldn't risk running anything through it but the propper oil though.

Got tranny warmed up today and drained oil. No chunks of iron on intake screen, no dirt either(which there shouldn't be as I am very clean with my oil). Just a couple little strands of o-ring rubber. Probably from when tranny was worked on in 68.

Filled with new fluid and drove it around. Shifts a little better, but next step I need to check pressures and I'm guessing the pressure regulators will need to be adjusted. (It sure would be nice if this was like a case ps, could adjust it all externally).

Oh well, good experience!
