I have a 1966 Ford 2000 Diesel that will not turn over. Nothing. At All. It was turning over on a new battery but the wire coming from the starter to the solenoid burn in two. Starter was smoking and started
knocking and then just quit. Would not even try to turn over after that. I bench tested the starter and it was gone. I replaced it with a brand new starter and now it wont do anything. Nothing. no clanking no
sparking no trying. Just dead. Any ideas on what to check next. im at a loss.

oth cables, both ends connections clean and tight.

I have made sure all connections are clean and tight. The negative battery cable is a little loose but making connection

After making sure all your cables are clean and tight on both ends as Jmor says then I would use a volt meter or test light to see if you are getting voltage to the small wire from the key switch that energizes the solenoid.

I will try the wire to the solenoid. If no power there would it be the switch or bad wire or could be both?

Try it by the starter first. If no power
there check the connection on the switch.
It could also be your neutral safety switch
- two wires going down to the top of the
transmission. Those switches do malfunction
and don't make contact sometimes. You can
test that switch with an ohmeter.
Another way to check if it's the starter is
to run a small jumper wire from the + side
of the battery and touch it to the start
terminal on the solenoid. This way is not
recommended for at least 50% of the
population in the US because they are too
dumb to make sure the tractor is [i:654c4848f0]OUT OF
GEAR[/i:654c4848f0] before they try this and will get
themselves run over.
We will let you determine which side of the
50% mark you fit in before you try this.

Ok. I jumped the starter with a screwdriver and it will turn over now. Not getting much fuel to the injectors but it will turn over. Could that be the wire to the switch post on the starter?

By turn over do you mean crank or run? some people use it to mean start and run, some use it to mean crank. Not a good term to use if you want to get your point across.

It will not start or run. It will turn over continuously with no start at all. I checked fuel at the injector pump and i have flow. I also have some fuel at the injectors just not much. I think the battery may have gotten too weak to pump enough fuel there. Back to the original problem, i have a good battery, all connections are tight and clean, I can jump the solenoid with a screwdriver. Is it likely the switch is gone or the wire from the switch to the solenoid or something else?

the two wires coming out of the top of the transmission are already patched together to bypass the safety switch though.

Okay i got it started. Its runs as strong as ever but i would like to figure out why the switch is not working. I can only crank it with a screwdriver. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

It could be a number of things:

1. Bad wire from regulator to key switch.
2. bad key switch.
3. Bad wire from key switch to solenoid.
4. Bad solenoid.
5. Bad connection from solenoid to ground.
