801 power steering gear/control valve

A couple of days ago, when I started my power steering-equipped 861, thick black oil started oozing out of the top of the steering column, below the steering wheel. I needed to use it for a short while, so I packed the area with rags and drove it for 1/2-hour or so. By the time I'd finished, the PS pump was making noise and steering was quite a bit harder.

Looking at the shop manual, it appears that there's a seal on the "adapter assembly", and possibly another in the bore of the control valve cover. Seems to me that this (or these) is/are the most likely to have failed.

Anybody familiar with this problem? Is the rebuild fairly straightforward and seals available?

According to the shop manual, it does not appear that any special tools, other than a bearing press, are required - correct? I have rebuilt a steering box for and 8N, but obviously this is more complex. Any advice is appreciated.

Also, is the PS system likely now contaminated with 80/90W from the gearbox?

Thanks.

OOPS, my bad  I should certainly have done the search! I've been on this forum on and off for several years & just didn't recall having seen this subject come up before.

Thanks for the links, looks like the first one hits pretty close to the info I need.
