961 Leaking Power Steering Cylinder

My 961 has had a leaky power steering cylinder since the day I brought it home a few years ago. It drips out underneath the two way valve.

As part of my spring maintenance I decided to put in seals in it, which was pretty straightforward. The two "cup" seals and two 0-rings in the main body were replaced (and lubed with fluid so the shouldn't have torn). Put everything back together, and it still leaks!!

It seems like the only way for hydraulic fluid to get into the two value is to be getting past the cup seal.

Am I missing something? Is it possible that the rod is just worn down too much?

Thanks!

I have two 961s on which I have repaired the leaking power steering cylinder. What is the two way valve?

Not sure if that's the right terminology. Its the part where the rod from the steering column attaches to the cylinder.

Dad has a 62 Ford 4000 RC. it was leaking oil out the end of the
cylinder. He bought a OEM seal. It lasted about two weeks. Bought
another seal. The Ford dealer said the nut on the end of the
cylinder had to be left as loose as possible so the cylinder could
move up and down on tight turns. We tried his suggestion. The seal
lasted slightly longer than the last. Since the seals were costing
$25 each we removed the power steering completely.

Ware figuring out what you are saying.. but if you would look in your parts/service manual it would help us help you by using common terminology.

like draglink, sector arm, sector gear, etc. for instance.. the rod doesn';t connect to the 'steering column'.. but to the sector arm.. etc..

OK, let's see if this makes more sense.

The seals were replaced in the Control Value assembly and the fluid is leaking from somewhere around the ball stud (where the steering drag link attaches). It a little hard to see exactly were the fluid is leaking out with the dust shield in place but it seems the only way fluid can get into that area is by getting past the seals on the value spool bolt.

Sounds like the oil is getting past the seals that you have already replaced

did you use OEM seals? the cup seals inner diameters are different between them, one larger than the other - if you got them mixed, that could be your problem - any pitting associated with the metal bore will allow for leaking - a brake cylinder hone can smooth up the bore, but if it's pitted, there's no fix -

I did mine a couple of years ago - two of my four 900's are hopelessly pitted - parts are scarce....
