New owner of an old 650; hydraulic lift is very weak and erratic. Thanks to you all I have several strategies to pursue. This forum is a fantastic resource! Will keep yall posted.

Haven't had much time to work on it. I did put compressed air to the hydraulic lift dipstick hole, and managed to blow UTF out of the 5 speed shifter lever boot area. May be a seal or o ring failed between tranny and hydraulic reservoir? Also will need to change the hydraulic fluid again as it's got milky looking once again (although not as bad as when first purchased).

On a happier note I pulled the oil line to the dead oil pressure gauge and got a fountain of oil, so I think I just need a new gauge
Thinking the oil pump may need rebuilding as I get a knocking for about 5 seconds when I crank it up after its been sitting. But then it quiets down and runs smooth..

If you've got a leak between the trans and the hydraulics and the fluid in the hydraulic sump got milky soon after changing it, I would change the trans fluid, as that is most likely contaminated as well. As to fluid blowing out around the shifter boot when you pressurize the hydraulic sump, it sounds like the trans is over full, so the high pressure line that goes from the pump manifold back through the transmission housing may be leaking a little, which would account for the weak and erratic behavior. Milky fluid means water contamination, and water in the trans is what rusts those hydraulic lines and causes them to leak over time.

Sean is likely right. A rusted out tube at the bottom of the transmission is a common problem. If you search the archive, you will find a lot of posts on this problem and the solutions.
