To allow fuel flow on slopes.. and to help prevent vapor lock on a very hot engine during summer use.

sotxbill-- Thanks for the info. I just picked up this Ford. I think it's a 3400. Hasn't been run in a few years but not seized. Pulled carb and installed a rebuild kit. Got a good clean gas flow from the tank and I cleaned the sediment bowl but, don't have fuel to it. I'm guessing the filter at the pump in plugged or the pump is faulty.

I have a 3 cyl gasser that the prior owner
blanked off the fuel pump and ran it gravity
flow. All he used it for was with a 3 point
bale spear for feeding hay to a couple of
horses. It ran ok just idling along but when
I put my brush mower on it it was not
getting enough fuel.
I hooked up a temporary electric fuel pump
and it ran a lot better.
I will replace the original pump this
summer.

I pulled the pump and found a lot of crap in it. The shaft was also seized. I freed it up and cleaned it, installed it and now it's pumping fine.
