Ford 4000 engine

I'm looking at a Ford 4000 with water in the oil. It has a 3 cylinder diesel engine in it. I'm curious if these engines are prone to any major problems and I'm curious of how common used engine parts(i.e. blocks and heads) are for them. Thank you for your time.

It is pretty common for diesels of that era
to get perforated blocks due to cavitation
if the correct additive was not put in the
coolant.
Usually they perforated into a cylinder wall
which could be repaired by boring and
sleeves.
Sometimes they perforated between the
coolant and oil galley which can also be
repaired by reaming the oil galley and
epoxying in a repair tube though not every
shop knows how/where to do that.
They are a good engine otherwise. Top end
good for 10K hours before a rebuild if
maintained properly. Bottom end would go
even longer.

The 3 cylinder diesel's were prone to pinholes in the cylinder walls from cavitation if the coolant wasn't maintained with the proper additive to prevent the cavitation. They can usually be bored and sleeved once the pinholes develop. There's always the chance that it was just a head gasket as well, but you won't know which it is until you tear into it.

The 3 cylinder diesel for a 4000 is a 201 ci that they used on various models for over 30 years from 1965 through the 90's, so lots of new parts are still available for rebuilds, like pistons, sleeves, etc. There are also tons of used blocks and heads out there as well. An engine from any of the following models will swap right out:

Don't forget that the 201 gas and diesel
blocks, cranks, cam and conn rods are
identical to the diesels so a gas block will
work too.

Will a 201 block work on a 332t head? I have a 332t in my skidsteer with bad block and new head. Looking for affordable reman bottof end
