340 lift issue

I just bought a 340 in neglected and abused shape, runs great and seems to be solid. Changed the oils and used it all day yesterday pulling a 7 foot disc (did I say it runs good?) Biggest issue I see so far is the 3-point is either up or down. If you pull the lever all the way back, it raises all the way up. If you move it forward any at all, it drops all the way down. And the levers don't stay in the middle, they fall on their own. It has the cork disks and I tightened the nut, but if you hold it in the middle it does not raise to the middle. It only raises all the way with the lever all the way. Ideas? It apparently sat for a while, fuel was full of garbage and I stopped up the filter after draining and refilling it with clean fuel. Has the 6-4 transmission which I had never used but think that I like quite a lot... has no wires or gauges on the dang thing except from the battery to a push button starter. Checked the oil pressure and it idled at 58, went to 70 with throttle. Starts immediately and does not smoke or blow by anything... Thanks.

I think a 340 was the 1976-83 replacement for the 3400. It would have the same upgrades as the 3600, namely, better electrics and better hydraulics.
I assume you know that for most uses you want to use the outer lift handle which is for position control. Not the inner one which is for draft control.
Yes, the lift handles need to be tight enough to stay where you set them and not slop around. Adjust them and use the outer handle and see how it functions.

Thanks for the reply, you've helped me before... I will revisit it and work on the tension again. Was just thinking maybe something else was wrong since there is no in between just up or down? It acts like only the top one inch of lever movement has all the control, everything below that is all the way down...

As far as electrical, this tractor has nothing. One wire goes through a push button to the starter. -It doesn't have a key, instrument cluster, or a wiring harness, the wires were cut off of the voltage regulator... Nothing is attached to the alternator... My buddy joked that I should screw a solar panel to the hood... Will be getting an alternator wired soon, any advice on that? -Great opportunity to start anew... Not worried about staying original here.

Again,
Are you using the outer lift handle?
If you are going to rewire the tractor I would dispense with the Vreg and wire in a 10SI GM type alternator.
Follow the link below for the easiest wiring diagram for a 3 wire setup I have found.
If it were me, I would use the Guage cluster for a 3600 and a aftermarket harness for a 3000 diesel. They sell the harness here at YT.
You will need to do a bit of cutting and rewiring to adapt it to work with the alternator and 3600 tach but that is pretty simple. You can use a 3600 harness but they are more expensive and just as much cutting/rewiring.
This is assuming you have the 3600 style tach drive under the oil filter which that tractor should have.
