Advice on installing a fan shroud on my Ford 4000

Hey Guys,

I bought an old style (1964 or so) Ford 4000 diesel tractor last fall. It runs fine (after some initial fuel problems were fixed) and I've used it a fair bit last fall and this winter. The temperature gauge registers right in the middle of the gauge. However, this tractor does not have a fan shroud on it. Furthermore, the fan only has two blades on it. The New Holland parts site shows that a two-blade fan is a valid part number, so maybe that's okay.

My concern is that, come summer and 90 plus degree days, I fear that the tractor might overheat. What do you think? My local New Holland dealer sells the shroud for about $125.00. Do you think it would be a worthwhile project for me to buy a shroud and install it now before the hot weather gets here?

Thanks for any advice.

I have a 1963 4000 diesel, purchased around 2009. It has a 2 blade fan with a shroud which I believe to be orginal. I have used it pretty hard over the years in hot weather without any over heating.

A shroud allows the fan to pull air over the entire radiator surface and I have always considered them to be important to any cooling system.

My 971 has a two bladed fan, and a shroud. I work it hard sometimes pulling baler and loaded wagon behind, and the temperature gauge barely comes up into the normal zone.

I think a 2 blade fan might have been standard on a diesel.
Some guys say you don't need a shroud but I don't think think Ford would install them on a tractor if they didn't think them important.

I think it's safe to say that from a manufacturer's perspective, a fan shroud is just as much of a safety feature as it is a cooling aid.

sure, shrouds are a good thing.
They also sell a 6-blade fan (gas engines) that might fit yours....howling loud though.

However, I have found a good cooling system flush and making sure the thermostat works properly usually takes care of that slightly warm problem.
(always interesting with thermostats.....dates on them from ancient times...check em)

and of course, before you do anything....meat thermometer it.
Gauges lie.
Working on one now, gauge is just touching the red line....good thermometer says 160.

ps what Bern said is true enough, working on a 960 now with the tin/tank off and no shroud........dang fan spinning is right there..lol
