Gear reduction starter

Has anyone used a gear reduction starter on a 5000 diesel? I was wondering if they are worth the extra money or not.
Thank you

I have not. The original Lucas starter lasts for decades and is readily available inexpensively in the aftermarket.

This is actually on an a62 loader. Seems like it turns over slow maybe just a new starter will do the trick.

Those Lucas starters are barely adequate on 6-cylinder engines, but more than enough for 4-cylinder Fords. If it turns slow, check cables and connections before tossing your old starter.

Can't help you on the gear reduction starter.
I would do as suggested below and check, replace your battery cables and connections. Make sure they are the big, honkin, size of a garden hose, double ought ones.
As for buying a new starter, I would have my old one rebuilt by a reputable rebuilder.
My pal Kenny put a new aftermarket starter in his 3 cylinder Ford. It is making a groaning noise and the bendix is kicking out after only 25 hours on it.

We seem to disagree on the suitability of a Lucas 5" starter to roll over a 6 cylinder engine.

And other than noting a difference of opinion, I refuse to be drawn into a pointless debate.

Good day.

Who makes a gear reduction starter for the 4 cyl? Might be interested for a couple of problem childs....

thx in advance.. Bill

I've got no experience with the Lucas on 6 cylinder applications.... but having witnessed the Bosch and Iskar variants in use on 4 cylinders I can tell you I'll put the humble Lucas M50 up against either one any time. Pound for pound and dollar for dollar they are hard to beat..
If they are limited on torque then as you suggest, check all of the connections... and failing a bad battery all they usually need is a bushing and brushes, clean the commutator... and rock on. I've only ever seen one failed open and one burnt armeture over the years. They're tough as nails.

Given the same size engine, a 6 cylinder should crank easier than a 4 cylinder.
