Pilot bearing for 1957 ford 860

The pilot bearing on my ford 860 has a open side to it and a closed slide could someone tell me which side goes to the motor and which slide goes to the transmission. Thanks for any help

Am I missing something here? We are talking about the pilot bearing that goes into the rear end of the crankshaft that in turn accepts the pilot of the transmission input shaft right? I would think the open end would go toward the transmission for that reason. Never seen a pilot bearing that was closed on one side......

I agree.

If mine, I would go to a bearing supplier and buy a sealed bearing.

If it is the pilot bearing that fits into the flywheel, it should be sealed on both sides. If it is the throw-out bearing, the machined/ground surface should face the fingers of the clutch release fork. This is if the 860 is similar to the 600 series tractors.

Ford originally installed the pilot bearing (shielded on one side only) with the open side towards the crankshaft. Suppliers still sell that bearing today as a replacement. It was a poor choice for that application from the brginning. Do yourself a favor and get one that's sealed on both sides. Standard 203 bearing with seals. It will last much longer.
