1969 Ford 3400 19-425 loader question

Hi Folks

I have a nice 1969 Ford 3400, Diesel, Select-O-Shift that I bought about 4 years ago for $2000.

I just purchased a Ford 19-425 (730 Loader) and bucket for it ($1200 nice shape).

On the tractor, where the pulley would normally connect to the loader drive shaft, I have just a STUB (like a previous owner had cut it off, or maybe this is what it is suppose to look like w/o the pulley).

1. does that shaft going into the tractor engine come out?
2. if yes to #1, can the shaft for the hydraulic pump go directly into the engine? (is it splined inside the engine?)
3. if no to #1 and #2 (sorry I guess it was a dumb question...) Is this a part replacement in the engine, if so what number? Also, is the loader hydraulic connection always to a pulley? (I don't need a pulley for anything that I'm aware of, for both the tractor engine, nor the loader. Just seems like extra junk, more vibration, etc. Are there better connection options than 4 bolts into the engine pulley?)

Unfortunately, it's still winter in MI, USA and I'm not about to take anything apart quite yet (I need it for snow removal).

Anyone have this same setup working and could provide photos?

any of these look like you? Usually one of the 4 bolt hubs is bolted to the crank pulley, then the correct length shaft and another hub went to the pump, BUT
60 years later, who knows what has been done !

I have the splined shaft and the 4 bolt flang (from the purchase of the 730/19-425 loader).

It looks closest to the photo of the 19-417 (and the loader is stamped 19-425).

Since I only have a bare shaft (with no pulley) coming out of the engine, I'm wondering what piece and how that piece is connected to the engine (diesel).

Thank you for the photos :)

Bob

Shaft coming out of front of engine with no pulley on it should be the crankshaft itself. Here is the parts drawing for the crankshaft assembly that shows how the pulley mounts to the front of the shaft. A replacement pulley should have the threaded holes that the coupler for your pump driveshaft assembly should bolt to.

If you have no pulley then the tractor has been running with no belt to drive the generator, fan or water pump also. Hopefully you haven't been running it like that for more than a few minutes at a time.

there is a belt going to generator (will have to take a photo, different pulley coming off of the TOP front of the engine). Tractor running fine since 1969 and with about 1850 hours.

the tractor has had 2 previous owners. (first was Redford, MI municipality -> they added another CUSTOM set of hydraulics on top of the transmission, that I'm still trying to figure out + it looks like they DID have a loader on it at one point. I can tell from the original blue paint showing where a loader would mount (and they painted the tractor ORANGE). Will have to take photos.

Shaft coming out of lower front engine looks like just a bare shaft (couldn't see a key slot as in your diagram), but got a good dumping of snow yesterday and will try to get a photo shortly (and assess how long and straight that shaft is).

Thanks all
Rob

Sorry for the confusion, I re-read your original post and now I see that you thought that the pump itself was supposed to have a pulley ion its shaft. The pump is driven by a drive shaft that connects via some couplings to the crankshaft pulley. The picture that JoeM posted shows the couplings and the parts drawing that I posted the link to shows the pulley at the front of the crankshaft and how the first coupling attaches to it.

The other pulley at the top of the engine that shares the belt with the generator should be for the water pump & fan. That same belt should also go down to the crankshaft pulley, as that is what drives the belt to provide power to the other two.

Hi Sean

I will take a picture (if not snowing tonight) and post in the morning.

The bottom/crankshaft pulley is not present, so I'm probably needing to find the part# or details (for the pulley and key) and get another.

The tractor has been running like this long before me (and the second owner from the early 80s).

(In all likelihood, the municipality which "goosed" the hydraulics and had a loader on it at one point, probably changed other things around too.)

Thanks ALL

Bob

you truly have my curiosity up now! can't wait to the engineering done to this tractor!
Pictures please!

OK, my bad, very bad.

(Sorry, I'm slow, not a farmer, nor overly mechanically inclined, but got a mental picture of the tractor-to-loader connectivity now.)

Looks like the original owner (a municipality/public works)CUT OFF the original loader shaft coming off the pulley (that's on the crankshaft).

Here's a PHOTO.
