Ford 3000 Gas Tractor - putt putt, choke, putt putt

Hey guys,

Looking for some expertise so I can get this tractor running better. It's just really rough. If I pull the choke out it seems to run a bit smoothly with some smoke, but
when I push it in it just won't run smoothly - the RPMs sorta move up and down. Should I replace plugs, add a fuel additive, pull and clean the carb?

When running and mowing, it sorta runs, then slows, and runs....

Any input here would be appreciated! - Ken

I would start at the tank. Pull the line coming from the shutoff valve and establish you have good fuel flow. Mine had a lot of gunk in the tank and would run then starve for fuel. Yours sounds similar. The valve was clogged in mine. Pulled the valve and shot air into it to clear it. Let the rest of the gas flow into a can, then filtered it and put it back in the tank after reinstalling the valve.

Mine did what Hog's did, plugged valve - of course you don't find that out until you fill the tank....

Also could be the accellerator piston assembly is jammed in the bore. (R&R carb to fix)

I just went through the same thing with an Allis CA. The sediment bowl was mostly plugged with fine rust.

Drained the tank and cleaned the sediment bowl and it ran like new again.

What part of the country do you live in?
If you live near a large river, lake, reservoir or the ocean row out to the middle of it and drop that bloody Holley to the bottom.
If you live near the mountains throw it off a cliff.
Then go buy yourself a Zenith carb.
It will make a man out of your tractor.
