201 Rear Bearing Cap Seals

Working on putting the 201 out of my 555A back together, and tonight worked on installing the rear main bearing cap. The side seals were just about impossible to install. I have two manuals - one for the 555A, and the other for the 10 Series. They both say to tap the seals into place one the cap is installed, but one talks about a rubber-coated seal with a steel core that you don't trim, and the other talks about a seal you do trim. The ones that came in my aftermarket gasket kit were a green cardboard-like material, and after holding them in place and working the bearing cap in and out a dozen times, and lubing them with Vasoline I finally got them where I think they should be. No way they slide in easily, and tapping on them wouldn't move them at all. I managed to get them installed so that they were a little proud of the bearing cap mating surface, and once I tightened them down I think they did slide up a little as they should. I put a dab of silicone sealer at the base of the back of the block as instructed in the manuals. The 10 Series manual says to soak them in penetrating oil, I'm guessing to get them to swell, but the 555A manual says nothing as I imagine is the case for the rubber/steel seals. Is there anything else I should do, to the point of getting CNH seals that might fit better? It is too much work pulling the engine for an oil leak down the road!

Thanks for the links - I didn't realize these were the same style seals that I've read about before on the 4-cylinder hundred series. I talked to my machine shop, and he confirmed they are a real pain so I feel better that at least I didn't do anything wrong. He was a little skeptical of using only sealant, for fear of an air bubble. I'm pretty sure I have them in there enough, but I'll try your suggestion of bubble soap and see what I get.
