861 powermaster muffler choices

Space limited in OEM position.

My 961 has a vertical exhaust with oval reverse flow muffler that is very quiet at the expense of somewhat increased back pressure.

Thanks Dean for the reply. I was wondering because I have a muffler off a '57 850 that has a baffle plate inside and the 801 muffler does not. I'd use the 850 muffler if it would fit the elbow. Just curious if you could get the 01 series muffler with a baffle plate. Jim

If you're not concerned about originality and run a horizontal exhaust under the tractor you could put just about any kind of muffler you like in line with the pipe underneath. Just be careful there's not too much back pressure. But given a large enough muffler housing you should be able to get one with enough baffling inside to quiet it down considerably without being too bad on the back pressure.

My three four cylinder rowcrops all have up exhausts and they don't seem that loud. Not too long ago I was on someone else's, and the different sound took me immediately back to my youth.

I went on and got a Stanley fo-14 muffler for it . I'd rather keep it original. I guess I'm just used to the 660. It runs quieter , but of course don't have the power like the 801. If it gets to bothering me too bad, I'll invest in some ear plugs 😄. I guess I could always change out the intake, carb and exhaust system off an 850.I got all that stuff put back used . I don't think there's any other difference between a 800 and a 801 other than those items??

The 8/9*1 tractors are noticeably louder than the 6** and 8/9*0 tractors due to the larger exhaust and somewhat higher compression ratio.
