NAA How much is too much?

Just finishing an engine swap in my Jubilee. Replaced the tired orginal engine and replaced with a 172 cu inch from a sprayer. I had the lower end checked out and replaced the rod bearings < mains were fine. Ran the valves also ,not sure what was done to the oil pump. Anyway on start up have 80 + oil pressure, old gauge so don't know how close it reads. Is that too much pressure? thanks joe

Darn phone cut me off.

2, nit uncommon to see 60 + on a tight cold engine.

My naa ( later 134 replacement engine ), will do 65+ on startup with 10w30 oil. If you have heavier oil and it is colder than Florida, you might make pressure in excess of the reliefs ability to dump for a bit till warmed or throttle reduced, etc.

So.. Check the gauge, and see what it does as it warms.

What oil you using, and what temps?

I bought a new gage but was not able to adapt to it. will take back and get another . Using 10-40 , was in warm shop and in the low 40's. thanks , joe

in a cold area I think I'd 10w30 and or a semi syn oil nowadays since they are getting so cheap. cven house brands have syn oils.

but DO get that gauge checked.

Joe,

10W40 sounds fine.

10W30 and 10W40 both have the same start up flow. (the 10 part of the designation)

The difference being that when at operating temp the 10W30 has a viscosity of 30 and the 10W40 a higher viscosity of 40.

I run 10w30 full synthetic in my Jubilee year around. I also use the smallest spin on filter I can find, because all filters I try, half the oil in it will drain back to crankcase. You can see it on dipstick after tractor sits for a few days. By using the smallest filter, it only takes a few seconds before oil pressure gauge indicates pressure. I may be wrong, but I feel full synthetic may coat parts better for the few seconds it takes to fill filter and build oil pressure. My oil pressures is around 40 when cold in N Indiana. My engine was recently rebuilt, doesn't use oil.

I have enough 15W40 Amsoil for my next Jubilee oil change so I'm going to try it and compare it to the 15W40 in it now. The tractor doesn't use a drop either and the pressure has never dropped below 40 hot at low idle. So we'll see . . . maybe it will rest at 42 psi or so at hot idle with the synthetic.

I used to sell Amsoil and do synthetic conversions and install bypass filters for years. One time I did one of the flat decks at a local lumber yard and without doing a thing but flushing the engine with crankcase flush and adding the synthetic 15W40, I got a 600 RPM increase in idle according to the tachometer . . . believe it or not.

I did the Fuller transmission and the Rockwell rear ends 80W90 gear lube on a highway tractor for a local dairy man who branched out into trucking as a sideline. He told me later that in one trip from here in B.C. to California and back, he had saved enough in fuel to cover what he had paid me for the expensive gear lube.

It was so long ago
Danged if I can remember for sure what the rpm's did :D
It could have been 300 and went up to 600 with the synthetic change ...
All I remember for sure is it made my eyes bug out
and my Building Supplies Manager, Halvor
a happy camper

It was at the very least a 300 rpm increase
I'll try to get a working tack on the Jubilee
And try the change to synthetic again
measuring the Red Tiger's rpm increase
My money's on, that there will be a rise.

:)

I finaly got back to replacing the old 80 pound pressure gauge with a new one today. New gauge read about 75 pounds on start up, was in the shop so did not run long. I will make new post also. thanks guys for the opinions. joe
