6cyl Ford diesel

Ok this is a bit of an open ended question to answer. What is the 254 in and what 6 cylinder are you talking about fitting. If you help us with this
info you might get some help back ;-).
Regards Robert

Well... a 401 shares the same mounting bolt pattern as the 256 (and 233 and 268), but I wouldn't call it a 'small' 6 cylinder. Depending on what it's in, you may have size
(length) issues. The other 6-cylinder Ford diesels I can think of, the 242 (6000/Commander), 363, and 380 (industrials), do not share bolt patterns with the 256.

I don't remember off hand if the 5500 had a 3-
cylinder or 4-cylinder, but from your post, I'm
guessing a 256 4-cylinder. A 7740 should have a
Genesis series 304 turbo 4-cylinder. There will be
some differences, linkages and such, but the engine
itself should bolt in.

yes mine is a 256
What is a genesis engine and it will mount to my torque converter transmission and engine mounts in the 5500 back hoe??

Genesis engines were the next engine evolution of the Ford Basildon engine like you have. That said... they ARE an evolution. The two principal problems you are likely to encounter are bolting the torque up and rigging a shroud arrangement for the rad. Older Basildon engines use an offset fan drive on the water pump. Genesis are center line drive. On the back end.... I could be mistaken but I believe the Genesis engine will have an 8 bolt flywheel whereas your engine will have a 6 bolt so swapping the flywheels is not an option. Aside from that the engine will bolt up fine and is physically the same size other than it's slightly taller. I suspect you may also run into some problems bolting the front pump. It's not something that could not be done but it will definitely involve a significant amount of presidential engineering... It'll cost you a lot more than finding the correct engine or buying a new block for the one you have. There would also be problems with fuel supply, filters, water outlets, tachometer and sundry other things. It's not something that couldn't be overcome but it's also not a project for someone looking for a get out of jail free card...

Well this site has been awesome and the members are definitely full of very useful knowledge
I really appreciate the info and I'm not looking for free don't mind spending 1500 or so on a good used engine less the fuel system as mine is good but can't find anything out there in Canada closest I found was a used 233 diesel for 2700 and a used 256 gas for 1500
