Ford 801 Powermaster clutch noise

Whenever I push in the clutch on my 801 it makes a faint grinding sound, if still shifts fine and stops whenever I let off of it. I'm not 100% sure what it is, though after searching around I think it could be the pilot bearing. I'm not a very good mechanic but unfortunately I would probably have to tackle this project myself since I couldn't haul it to or afford to have a mechanic do it for me. What are your alls thoughts as to what it could be?

More than likely, it's the release (throw out) bearing rather than the pilot bearing.

That said, It's good practice to replace both if you need to remove the pressure plate.

I agree with Dean, it's probably the throwout bearing. If the pilot bearing starts making noise you usually can't shift without grinding gears. You have to split the tractor to replace either and since the major cost is the time it takes to do that, replace both while you have it split and look closely at the clutch itself to see if it makes sense to replace that too.

agreed , tob is the one that growls when clutch pushed.

pilot might chirp all the time and bind making shifting harder.

T/O bearing as others have said, check the fingers closely on the pressure plate as they may have damage due to the bearing
If you have to replace the pressure plate replace the clutch too, if you have a single stage clutch it want be to costly, if you have a duel stage clutch be prepared for sticker shock lol

Is there any what to find out if it is a single or double stage clutch without having to split it open?

yes- what is the model number for the machine? stamped on the flat area behind the starter

should be something like 841, 851, 861 (those are the most common) if it says 861 then it SHOULD have a two stage clutch.

-or-

does your tractor have a 4 speed or 5 speed transmission? if 4, its a single stage clutch. if 5 you have a 50/50 chance its single or not.
