Went out today and did some snow removal for a couple hours, stopped for a coffee break, went back out after about one hour to continue. Pressed starter, it fired right off and ran for maybe 15 seconds and quit. Never fired again. Left it for about an hour while I scratched my head, went back out, pressed starter button, same thing. It fired, ran about 10 seconds and quit. Would not fire again. Removed drain plug from carburetor, had good steady gas flow. Replaced drain plug, tried again, never fired. Any ideas on what to do next?

testanley - I had that problem today on my 860. Symptoms same as yours. It was the oil bath air filter. The oil bath had water contamination and was frozen. Cleaned it up and fired right up and good to go.

BTW, we have been below freezing here for a few days.

testanley- I sometimes jump ahead of myself. You checked fuel flow and it was good. Next, after running and quitting, you should check for spark immediately after stalling. If ya got spark then go on to other diagnosis.

Starts and dies?

Starts means it has spark and timing is decent.

That leaves fuel.

Seeing fuel thru the float valve is all you checked with a drain test.

Confession is good for the soul so I hear. Actually a neighbor was doing the first 2 hours of snow removal, I was only "supervising", and when he stopped the tractor thinking it would be used no more that day he "turned the gas off" as I have asked him to do when he finishes with the tractor. Except this time instead of the tank valve, he turned the main jet in the carburetor off. Opened it up 1 turn, cranked and it purred like new (well almost). Soundguy it was your post that got me thinking a little further about what might be wrong. Thanks to all.

Ouch.. He adjusted the carb to turn the gas's off, that's a new one on me!

Glad ya found it and it was no big deal.
