5200 Steering motor shot

I have a '68 5200 row crop tractor with a bad steering motor. The steering motor has had problems for years and the local dealer could not repair it on multiple attempts. Previously when the steering wheel was lifted straight up the front wheel turned hard left and the steering wheel spun. The steering would spin with enough force to bruise your forearm with the spinner knob. By pushing the steering wheel back down the wheels and steering wheel would return slowly to the straight position. The amount of vertical play was less than a sixteenth of an inch.

While plowing a few acres of land this last weekend I lost the ability to turn left unless I lift the steering wheel. When I do lift the steering wheel the front wheel turn to the left but the steering wheel no longer rotates.

The people I have talked with tell me the steering motor is not rebuild able and I have yet to find a replacement or retro fit part. Does anyone know of a solution or possible part location. A working tractor is the ultimate goal.

My cousin went through this with his 5200 last year.
He ended up taking two salvage steering motors and
combining parts to make one working one. New
parts are no longer available. Another option might
be to adapt a different steering motor to the tractor -
from a combine or other tractor. ...hopefully one with
better parts availability.

Years ago there was a replacement avaible. It was a Dan Foss/ TRW/ Ross unit. Proably one off 7700 would work fine. Have to fab some new brkts.

I had a Case that had a steering motor problem. The dealer told me that it was a tricky job to repair them. I took it out and took it to them and they fixed it. I remember him saying that the housing had to go in an oven and the rotor in the freezer before reassembly in order for it to go back together. I never had any more problems with it.

You can try Midwest Steering, they list one that fits a 5200 and several others. I got one last year for a FarmTrac that also fit several Ford
models. I don't know if this is the one you need but they have a large selection.

There were two different steering motors for the 5200 (and 7200). They changed them on 4/1/73, and the one that you show is the later style, which was used on many other models after the 5200 production had ended, so they are still available. The original post said that he has a 1968 5000 so he needs the earlier style and that one is no longer available and the newer style won't fit an earlier tractor without replacing the mounting brackets and the rest of the steering column.

Thank to all for the help. If I can't find a direst replacement I will have retro fit something in it. I borrowed Dad's NH 5070 to finish plowing. Three more days and I should have the fields ready for rain. Then I can haul the Ford in and start repairs

Thinking about ordering the steering column from a NH 5070. A little iron work and cussing and I am back to baling, not to mention new hoses. The hoses and fittings all leaked anyway and were scheduled for future replacement.

Thanks for the Midwest Steering lead. Unfortunately the part shown is the newer style. Have you had any experience with their tech support? I will probably change to the NH 5070 steering column and will have questions.

Thanks for the lead Surplus Center lead. it looks like a one stop shop for toy building and repair. Have you had any experience with their tech support? I am going to need help sooner than later on this project.

I have, what I believe is the exact same thing, from a Oliver combine. I have had it on the self for 10 years? thinking I would need it on one of my 5200s. If interested, my email is open

I have a 1968 5200 with the same steering motor issue you had with yours, could you perhaps take a moment to help thru what you decided to do? I would really appreciate it. My name is Bill and my email is [email protected] if you would like to get right to me. My problem is not with it not working, I just have a bad seal and the seal is $150.00. Please let me know

Best you start a new thread on this issue, many that use classic version on this forum will never see you post since it's attached to a 4 year old thread.
