4000 starter drive replace

I just received my new starter drive for this tractor. I bought it here on this site. There were no instructions with this unit, but am assuming that's because its pretty straight forward. Put on the new drive and put in the retaining pin. Simple, but my problem is the new drive has the pin hole partially blocked by a metal ring. I also know you are NOT supposed to spin this at all even by hand, how am I supposed to get the pin in? I can take a picture of it if that would help, let me know, thanks

Which 4000???? There are 2 different ones, '62 -'64 4cyl and '65 to '74 3cyl.

My guess without knowing your model is that you need to compress the spring.

sorry 1964 and have added a pic

after playing around with it a little more. It seems that the top part will compress down enough to get the pin in, but there's no way you can do that by hand. I'm sure a lot of people in here have done this before, so any help would be great, thanks

Just wanted to let you know that I was able to compress the drive using two welding vises. Once you do that everything of course is pretty simple. Starter is back on and tractor is running again.
