6610 no reverse

New to the forum and would appreciate any help on our Ford 6610 issue. We have a mid 1980s 6610 with cab and dual power with about 3200 hrs. The reverse gear is totally gone and feels like it isn't even there when you move the shift lever. Any ideas on where to start troubleshooting at?

Thanks

My first thought would be a broken shift fork.
It may make a difference. .. 8-speed crashbox or the
synchronized tranny?

Assuming you have the 16x4 (non-syncro) tranny: You most likely have a broken shift fork. The 2nd-R shift mechanism is a two piece affair, both of which typically require at least a split in the rear of the transmission to replace.

If the upper fork ("arm") is broken, you can replace it without a split. You cut your existing shift rail out with a sawzall and remove the broken fork through the shift cover opening. You then take a new rail, cut it in half and have it threaded so it can be installed with a stud joining the two halves. I do this so I don't have to split the tractor, which is no fun on your model.

It is the 16 x4 tranny. I was afraid it may be the shift fork. Thanks for getting me started on where to look.

It is the 16 x 4 and thanks for the idea on the upper arm. I'm going to pull up the floor board in the cab and see what I can get to through the access panel to see where we go from here. Appreciate the picture also.

I don't think the shift forks are available from CNH anymore, according to the parts man at the local dealership.

partspring.com claims to have 76 of the forks (part number 83974360 - $91.25) and 239 of the arms (part number 83955498 - $118.00) in stock.
