I have a 1967 3 cyl 4000 SOS that is leaking at the PTO shaft. Looking through the online parts catalog I saw there are different seals depending on whether you have single speed or two speed PTO. My operators manual has an illustration of a small lever under the SOS filter that changes speeds (540/1000) and a second lever behind your left heel for Ground drive PTO described as "Deluxe PTO". My tractor has the small lever but not the one for ground drive. Does a "Deluxe" PTO have both two speed AND ground drive features? What is the small lever for in the absence of ground drive? I just split it to change a hydraulic pump seal and it's not running yet(waiting for parts) or else I'd just go try it.
Thanks for your help. Tim

There were 3 different PTO setups on the 3 cylinder 4000 as designated by the next to last character in the model number:

4 - single speed 540 rpm independent PTO
5 - dual speed 540/1000 rpm independent PTO
6 - "deluxe" which had dual speed 540/1000 rpm and ground speed PTO.

Look at the end of the PTO stub shaft. If it is a dual speed it should have a recess in the end of the shaft with a screw that holds the stub shaft on, as there were two different stub shafts, a 6 spline shaft for 540 rpm use and a 21 spline shaft for 1000 rpm use. If there is no recessed screw in the end of the shaft then it shuld be a single speed PTO model.

Very helpful Sean- thank you! The model # recorded in the owners manual is 41014E so that makes it a single speed PTO. Any idea
what the little lever under the SOS filter is then?

You can't always depend on the numbers - even from Ford.
I have a 66 4000 with 42024E for the model # stamped into the bell housing.
If I read it correctly that translates to an SOS with single 540 pto.
But in fact, the tractor has dual 540/1000 pto and ground drive.

"Deluxe PTO" includes both two speed and ground speed features. It's possible on your rig that someone removed the ground speed lever and plugged the hole because of a broken part and subsequent lack of replacement parts availability. The other lever should then be for the two speed option, however I have seen that disconnected as well, likely for the same reasons.

Since this post originated because you needed to know which seal to buy, simply look at the end of the PTO shaft. If it's hollow with a screw inside, it's a two speed shaft.

(quoted from post at 00:07:20 01/15/16) "Deluxe PTO" includes both two speed and ground speed features.

Yes, the "Deluxe PTO" included both 540 and 1000 rpm plus ground speed, and I think that was the only option besides the single speed in the pre-1965 S-O-S tractors, but for the 1965+ models there was also a 540/1000 dual speed only that did not include the ground speed. From my copy of the Ford Service manual for the 1965-1975 thousand series tractors:

(quoted from post at 14:20:28 01/15/16) Good to know - thanks Sean. I did not realize that you could get dual speed w/o the ground speed. That was maybe a pre-'65 condition?

News to me too. I guess I'm used to the pre '65 models that as far as I know were only 540 or 540/1000/Ground Drive.

I guess we're not too old to learn new things!!!
