57 Ford 840 transmission issue

I have a 57 Ford 840. I can not get it to slip into 1st or 3rd gear. It will go into 2nd and 4th just fine and move. Any ideas on what to look for? I have never worked on the trans before do if you have photos that would help. Thank you all

the poppet ball and spring is stuck I expect. It is at the rear under the shifter cover.you will see it when you take the cover off. watch out and make sure the spring does no jump out. Buy a FO-20 IT manual and read it. that will help you a lot

Will the shift lever move all the way to the right?
If not, you may have a broken spring under the cover.
That's what I found wrong with mine that wouldn't go into 1st/3rd.

Thank you I am going to look into it. I will go to TSC and see if they have the service manual as well. I am not sure what a Poppet ball looks like or where it would be located.

I think you will find rust has stuck the shift linkage inside the transmission. If so you can probably remove the shift cover and clean, penetrate, lubricate rusty parts and gently use a pry-bar to get it back in motion. Rainwater or condensation can cause this over a period of time.

I took the cover off. The Poppet ball and spring were fine. No rust or corrision. There seems to be alot of play in the shifter. The assembly looks pretty worn. But I cant see where that would not allow me to shift into 1st or 3rd. With the cover off I can move the two large plates to the front of the transmision like it is shifting the gears but i dont know to which gears. If i was just shifting it to 4th and 2nd like i alway culd. I dont know i have taken some ictures on my phone i will try to upload them. Still looking for answers. Any help is apprecaited.

You never mentioned one way or the other about whether it would go into reverse before you took the top off. Maybe that information would be helpful to someone trying to remotely diagnose your problem.

The shaft or rail, with a notch in it, that travels from the front to the back of the transmission, directly under the spring and ball you removed shifts first and third gear. I am guessing it is in first of third gear, since you say the shift cover is worn .Slide the rail back to neutral and carefully put the cover back on.

Thank you John. Will I have to have the
clutch pushed in to be able to move it?
should it move forward and backwards from its
position now or just backwards?

The picture shows the gear shift lever terribly wore out . The square part of the shifter should be up into the square part of the shift cover. Remove the shifter and redo a shaft machine thrust washer to fit between the socket of the top and the bottom of the shifter ball. BTDT so the lever is raised up to fit the track in the shifter top.

You should be able to move it forward and back from that neutral position. Look down at the end of the fork and you'll be able to see the collar engage the dentals on either the 1st or 3rd gear when you move it.
