what can cause a rotor to break inside the distributor cap?
could it be electrical? or a physical obstruction?

thanks dave

Most likely something physical. That rotor is supposed to have a spring clip under it to hold it in the proper position. If that spring clip is missing or damaged then the rotor can flop around while it's spinning and hit the cap, which can break the rotor or the cap or both. The spring clip is the part labelled #38 in the parts drawing at the link below:

Also, if this was a new rotor then it might not have been the proper one even if the package claimed it was the proper part number. Been hearing more and more stories related to "not quite right" parts these days.

thanks for the quick responce Sean, i have ordered a dust cover and a rotor for it the one that came with the tractor was in pretty bad shape, i tried to start without the dust cover just to see if it would fire, well the rotor broke, the clip was in place but im sure now that it was because of no dust cover and or wrong rotor

thanks dave

I ran into the very same thing on a buddy's 861 a while back. The problem was a CHEAP aftermarket rotor clip . The clip wasn't even spring steel. Luckily , I had an original in my stash.

s you found, you can't get away with that. If cap is made for use with a dust cover & you install cap w/o the dust cover, then the cap sits lower, i.e., closer to rotor. Sometimes too close!

well just received my new dust cover and rotor, didn't fire up, checked under distributor cap and busted rotor again, anyone have this problem, did YT give me wrong distributor cap?

dave

If you had the dust cover, cap, rotor clip and rotor properly seated you have been bitten by the increasingly common aftermarket parts gremlin.

Most likely the problem is parts form the land of almost right. I buy all my tractor parts like those at my local auto parts store that way I can have them today and they are B/W or other such brands which are a lot better then TSC parts are

i believe it to be a poor distributor cap, i tried another rotor and same thing, going to head to napa and pick up a rotor and
another distributor cap

i'll update
thanks dave

I bet the distributor shaft where the rotor fits is rusty and the rotor is not seating. Setting up too high

And NAPA won't have the dust cover, which it sounds like you need. Your "friendly NH dealer" get's $40+ for it.

agree with the guys, it's a shame with the new parts today.
routine tune-ups, I clean up caps and rotors and re-use them.
If I have to use new ones, after putting it all together, I unsnap the clips and turn the engine ever so slowly by hand. If that cap twitches at all....mods needed.
remember when properly assembled..clip..dust cover...gaskets..etc, the rotor doesn't actually touch the cap contacts when spinning. Most new rotors need the slightest 'dressing' to make them clear......not the way it is supposed to be, but it is what it is.

had someone raise an eyebrow watching me clean plug wire towers on an ancient cap with a screwdriver and some 000 steel wool. "lots of work to save 5 bucks" he said.
hmmph..not if I have to spend $5 half a dozen times to find a new one that will work :D

ps JMOR mentioned the dust cover must be present on some Fords. On some models/brands, the round gasket under the dust cover must be there too.....

Bingo.

I recently gave up on TISCO caps for 4 cylinder priors. Different box, lower price & unacceptable fit all began a few months back. Two of the first 3 were unserviceable, I warranteed all 3 and pitched the last one in the trash. Bask to stocking OEM New Holland caps for that application. TISCO does offer the dust cover, so far they are still OK at a better price than OEM.

Since TISCO was bought by Blount industries, the beancounters seem to be running the show. Into the ground.
