I would like to replace the points on my 1957 Ford 1801 with an electronic module. My system is 12volt neg ground. I believe it currently has a resistor in line to the coil. Any advice from someone whose done this before would be appreciated.

I installed one on my 1955,850 Ford. Mine is also a 12 volt neg. ground. The directions give you options on the install. I removed my resistor, put in the high voltage coil, then installed the module.

According to the Pertronix catalog the 801 series uses # 1244A unit (12 volt, negative ground) same as 8N. I put one in my 8N which had been converted to 12 volt with alternator using NAPA IC14SB coil (no resistor required). I installed the pertronix module and left the NAPA coil in. It runs good. I personally like the direct 12 volt coil which eliminates the potential problem of a resistor and extra connections. You do not need a "high power" coil with these tractors.

I just put the 1244a unit on my 641 tractor a few days ago. Install was easy, about 10 - 12 minutes. Tractor runs smoother and starts a little easier maybe. It started very easy to begin with. I have a NAPA coil and no external resistor.

Thanks for all the helpful advice. Sounds like even a klutz like me can do this. Anything to keep the old girl working.
