Ford 4630 pto clutches

My Uncle is working on a 4630 for a friend. He can't get the pto clutch pack out. He has the tractor split, the lift housing off and the pump off. I have heard of some Ford's that you have to pull the right axle off to get the pto clutches out is this one of them?

A rear split should give access to the PTO clutch without removing the hitch cover or hydraulic pump. If he hasn't made the rear split between the transmission and rear axle center section, the PTO clutch isn't coming out.

No.... Once all visible obstructions are removed it should pull straight forward. Probably something is buggered on the rear shaft.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm thinking you also have to pull out the rear PTO shaft first. It's been years since I've done one, but I seem to recall doing that.

I can't remember either.... for sure... but it seems to me that if there's nothing obstructing the drum from pulling straight forward then there would be no need to pull the shaft. Not that it really matters. Pulling the shaft is but a small job anyway.
I got a bad feeling that if it won't pull forward it's likely because the rear shaft has a twist in the spline. That not going to be pretty... or cheap.

You may be onto something, Bern. Perhaps the drum won't clear the front flange of the center housing by simply coming straight out. The only way to raise the drum to clear the mount flange or web would be to pull the rear shaft.

He tells me it has a two piece shaft. A long one and a shorter one about two foot long that goes into the clutch housing. I don't know if he has the one out of the clutch housing? But he tells me it has a step down behind the mounting flange about an inch and about 3 inches behind that it steps down again and if that step was about an inch shorter it would come right out.

I don't know what the hell he's working on.... but a 30 series tractor's PTO drive starts on the pressure plate. That drives a tube shaft into the main front cover of the transmission. At that point a gear steps the PTO drive down in speed and sends the drive through a shaft internal to the transmissions counter shaft where the PTO exits the transmission on the bottom. This shaft, IIRC, would be stepped. Then there is a slip couple that joins the output of the PTO from the transmission to the input shaft of the PTO clutch pack located in the rear axle center housing. To remove these parts requires a rear split and the clutch drum will pull forward when you strip away everything visibly in the way. The rear output shaft of the PTO simply slides into the rear of the clutch drum and that is pulled by unbolting the bearing retainer on the rear of the tractor and pulling everything rearwards.
If you need to change the internal PTO shaft through the transmission then it will pull rearwards... but IIRC, you will also need to remove the front cover of the transmission to gain alignment of the new shaft on reinstallation...

I agree with Rod - this makes no sense. If the title didn't say "4630", I would have guessed an SOS trans.

Pics would be nice about right now.

Well I told him what you said and he got it out. They wasn't no two piece shaft. He took the shaft out the back and the clutches out the front. I asked him were he got the information about the two piece shaft he said the dealer told him it had one and showed me a print out they gave him it showed two shafts one longer than the other.

Thanks for the help
