641 loader problem

I don't have any pics so I will try and explain my problem.

I have a 1959 641 that has a fel. I do not know the make or model of the fel, there is nothing on the fel to identify it. What I can tell you is this:

The bottom frame of the fel is made from tubular steel, aprox. 4inch diameter. It bolts onto the front via a heavy piece of angle iron that is bolted to the axle. It attaches in the rear, under the axle by sliding into larger diameter steel tubing which is then bolted to the axle using the fender mounts. There is also a bolt that screws in from the top on the larger tubing as a set screw once it is all assembled. The rest of the loader is made from heavy 1/2 inch steel, the exception to this is there are two tubular steel pieces about 3 inches in diameter that are welded to each arm up front.

I have 2 hydraulic rams to lift the arms and one for the bucket. It originally had a small forked manure bucket on it. The arms are gravity drop, no down pressure.

Never had any problem until today. I was hauling some junk with the fel and pushing some of the pile with the bucket. Went to lift a load the third time and the tube frame along the bottom, on the left side broke in two. I dumped the load, which was mainly old lumber pieces and scrap construction crap. I have lifted heavier loads before with no problem.

As I carefully drove back to where my welder is, I noticed the other side had also cracked, but hadnt broke all the way. I was able to get it back together and welded, not sure how much the weld can take. Not going to put a heavy load on it until I know it can handle it..

as I finished puting away my tools, I started the tractor and lifted the arms. I then went to tip the bucket up and there was a horrible rattle noise coming from the front of the tractor. It sounded like the fan hitting on the shroud, but I couldnt see anything being hit.

I got back on the teactor and the noise just stopped. I stepped on the clutch to put it in gear and it sounded like I had a block of metal inside the front of the engine rattling around, my rpms dropped and I was about to shut it down when the noise stopped and my rpms came back up.

I then rried to raise the arms more, but nothing.. I tried the bucket but that didnt work either. My best guess is my front mounted hydraulic pump took a crap. I could see the shaft was still spinning, but havent ruled out a problem with that either.

I did some checking around, and I have not seen another fel that looks like this one. There isnt any I.d. info on the pump either, so that makes it hard to find a rebuild kit.

Anyone have any ideas, based on my description what loader I might have or possibly what could be wrong, or suggest a new pump that I cou
d get?

Thanks.

As luck would have it, after I posted that, I did some more in depth searches and I think it is possible that I have some form of a Freeman loader. I hope this helps.

Sounds like you may have a combination of problems.
The frame breaking being one, the hydraulics being another.
Is it possible that the frame breaking jammed the pump into
the tractor so as to have broken the coupler and/or stripped
the splined shaft/hub that makes the pump run?

If the pump is turning, truly turning, not just spinning under no
load, then you should be able to measure output pressure.
When my splined shaft stripped it would spin while setting there
idling, but if I put a load on it like trying to lift the loader it would stop.

Mine also stripped while the bucket was about 6 feet off the ground.
Any movement of the control levers caused it to lower.
No pressure from the pump to do anything other than lower.

Loader cannot come in contact with pump, nor did it. There is also a prtective bumper/grill surrounding the pump.

I will be pulling the pump tomorrow, and tearing into it to see exactly what I am dealing with. Hopefully it is the shaft and not the pump. But if it is the pump, I have no idea what it is, mfg, size, gpm, model, nothing on the pump says anything. I know that without a picture of the pump it is highly doubtful anyone is going to be able to know what it is either.

In case it is the pump, and I need a new one, any suggestions on a new one?

and thanks for the reply.

SouNdguy, that is exactly what I am going to do.

As for the pump, it survived, the 3 teeth on the shaft is what gave way.

New shaft, a couple splints welded in place and I am back in business.
