Done for now, things i learned

Body work is a skill i need to learn if i'm going to do more of this. Restoring parts would be better in the long run than buying pretend parts from China. Not knocking suppliers, but wow, some of this stuff is pretty bad. I need a spray gun. I need to settle down and not try to rush things. My problem here is limited space and i need my garage back to work on my money makers (2 Jeeps) So i rushed it a bit. Now it's zero out, and i'm done until nicer weather. Again. Thanks to all the comments and advice, you guys are great!

Very nice job! Lots of hard work went into that nice tractor. Now put it to work!

For a spray gun, if you want to go cheap:

I got a gravity gun from Harbor Freight for something like $20. Other places, such as Northern Tool and a number of online places carry similar versions. I like it because it doesn't require a big compressor and the cups that hold the paint are cheap.

Since I used a paint with added hardener, I simply put a clean cup on the gun and spray mineral spirits through the gun to start the cleanup. Like any spray gun, pull it apart and clean it after you are done for the day and you won't have any problems.

Not sure about painting at 0 degrees though!

Thanks, yeah, when it was in the 30's i could get the garage up in the 50's, now, not a chance. I'm pretty happy with the 12 volt
conversion, sure makes the lights brighter. Now, she's out in the shed with the other farm equipment. :)

You need to give us a "warning" before posting pics of shiny RED tractors!! lol!! NICE job!! Be pleased with yourself!!

Looks great to me!!!! I'll second what Beanmedic said about the Harbor Freight paint gun. They work pretty good and sometimes with a coupon that are $9.99. I use one for spraying primer and painting the bodies of tractors and on equipment. Shoots a good pattern and saves wear on the better gun

Thanks, i'll look into it. For now, i'm taking the rest of the winter off, or, so i say :) This is a brushed paint job except for the tight places and the motor itself. It turned out a lot better than i expected. On the 3rd coat, if you lightly feather the brush after spreading it evenly, and stay in one direction, it looks pretty good actually. But, the sprayer would be a lot faster, and be even nicer yup. So before i attempt another, that will be the first thing i get.

You did a lot of work to make it look nice, and I'll bet its fine (mechanically) for any work you need to do with it, to me that is more important.

Given the styling of these, a nice paint job, whether sprayed/brush applied with some care, really makes them look sharp regardless. Nicely done !

Du,

Looks great, I'm envious.
Your's is the first bumper I've seen since mine with two bolt per side mounting. Mine usually had a 120 pounds of ballast bearing down on it but I took it off for painting.

I've done that the last couple winters, with grain drill parts, and my combine. The liquid paint i used is Van Sickle, Ford 8n red, and the number (i can't remember) is 374? and the rattle can is 370? not sure, maybe other way around, but the can is ever so slightly darker and not as glossy. There were places i used the cans for a tack coat like on the pump pickup tube, then went back over with the brush. Watching for, and catching runs was the hardest, sometimes they didn't show up for a while, and after the first coat, it's hard to tell sometimes how evenly i spread the paint. Thanks.

I was told the engine was rebuilt by a local tractor shop, and the clutch is plenty good, breaks are good (now) no telling how many hours are on it because the cable was broke at 1700. It's far from museum, but sure gonna look nice pullin my combine :) Thank you

Looks great.

Complete agreement about aftermarket parts. I avoid such like the plague.

Du.

They are just square weight-lifting weights.
I ran two long bolts through each bank of them, that go into two bracket/clamps I made to keep it all in place.

Sir Farmsabit,

One more thing.
If you were going to use this ballast method
use a solid iron bar to give you more weight and more anti-bending strength in it's supplementary function as the core of your black bumperettes. :D

Mine's a hollow tube . . . for now.

Very nice, i like that. If i need some weight up there i will definitely look into doing something similar, thanks again.
