Installing block heater

I've got a 5600 and a TC-45 that I'm going to install block heaters in. The 5600 looks easy enough, I'll just swap out the old one and replace. Should I drain the coolant first? Or, just let it spill out and refill when I'm done?
Also, on the TC -45 I'll have to remove the freeze plug. Any tips on getting that out without creating a bigger problem?

Plain old freeze plugs, the dish shaped approx. one and a quarter inches, are usually removed by piercing with a screw driver and prying.

I use a punch on the right or left side o the core plug and that knocks it around but not into the water jacket. The use pliers to remove it.
